What does the return arrow mean in Mail?

Some e-mails I have not yet responded to have the return arrow next to them in the preview pane. This is causing me trouble because knowing whether I have responded to an e-mail is critical to getting work done.

It occurred to me that perhaps it means "you responded to this thread in the past," but I have an e-mail that I did respond to, but there is no arrow.

I confirmed with the person at the Genius Bar that the arrow means only "you have responded to this thread at some point." So there is no way of knowing whether you've addressed an e-mail with a history.

The workaround is to press the button that says "Don't organization messages by conversation in this mailbox."
