mac mini server iphoto

I have a new 2011 mac mini quad i7 server running LION and iPhoto does not refresh in the faces portion. While on a named face, after some time the collection of confirmed photos of someome does not appear but as the pointer runs over where they should be they pop up although in quarters. I also noticed long cusor pauses where the swirling wheel continues endlessly until you move the pointer to the lauch bar on the bottom. Taking the pointer over another application causes the swirl to stop even in the iphoto app. I just perfomed the server software update ( mins ago ) so I don't know if the swirl problem is fixed but I have not seen it yet. The update did not fix the iphoto faces problem. I have it only sourcing hdmi to an LG TV.

I have also witnessed the black screen of death where the computer hangs but not since the update and I have had issues getting VNC sessions to be stable with the screen sharing even after changing their allowed protocols to confirm to those allowed by LION.

Anyone with similar issues or solutions?

Well, had several days of good ( but light computing ) and then Firefox stated that it needed an update. Performed the update and then it stated that my flash player was out of date. Updated it. Then tried to switch users and got the black screen of death. I don't know if it is related to the flash player still but the operating system is a whole lot less stable than any OSX version I have used going all the way back to 10.3 in 2002. It reminds me too much of the OS9 which give the apple bomb on a 100+ page paper I was writting for a co-op engineering end-of-term report. It had me up for days and made me swear-off Apple till stable looking OSX came along. I hope they get the bugs fixed ASAP. Summary of problems are:

1) buggy multi screen sharing. I installed 5 different VNC clients on several 10.4 machines and can't predict with confidence which will provide a stable screen share

2) iphoto faces experience incomplete array of faces display. faces show up after waving cursor over the faces. The left bar becomes hashed and unreadable after some sequence of full screen / partial screen toggling.

3) random black screen of death while trying to switch users, cursor swirling but does not switch users after typing in pasword. just hangs

4) iphoto hagging swirling cursor but becomes free again by wiggling over icons on launch pad.

Please add stablility back into the OS.

I could not get screen sharing to work stabily using either Screen Sharing or Remote Management until I followed the advice at thks post http://support.iteleportmobile.com/entries/468196-iteleport-under-os-x-10-7-lion along with Jollysfast VNC for OSX. In configuration pane for the server, I set the Server Type to Mac and enable only zrle, zlib, and rre. In the JollysFastVNC preferences I set VNC Hosts to Autoconnect under the General tab. Under the VNC tab set Server Type to Mac and again only enable the same Transport Encoding Order protocols. It will ask for a login and password, and that has to be exact user names and passwords from the server machine.

My Server Status widget no longer works. I will try rebooting. I don't recall having the iPhoto partial redraw in faces since the 10.7.1 upgrade. I did get the black screen of death twice since the upgrade and as I recall it only occurs while trying to switch users. The cursor still hangs in iPhoto but it can be nudged to end swirling by bringing it down to the launch bar. It also gets pitifully slow at times and if I had to venture a guess as to why, it appears to be related to time machine. I did notice that the EBAY app froze several times. I plan on taking the mini server to the genius bar later this week after compiling more details.

In addition to the details above to make screen sharing work. I was also able to make an ad-hoc network between my mac mini server and a macbook pro using the same setting but I found I also needed to allow "internet sharing". I tried a couple of days ago without the internet sharing on and that did not appear to work. I do notice a speed increase in going ad-hoc direct to the mini server versus doing wifi to my LAN on the same network.

Yesterday the mini slowed to a halt again. Very slow, cursor swirling and unresponsive. The system finally froze for good when I tried to switch users. My guess is that the swirling frozen cursor during user switching is similar to just in general except the launch bar is not present so you can't move the cursor over another program's icons to "unfreeze' the swirl. I do find that after I rebot, the EBAY app is completely lost, it can't find the ebay website. I am not sure but it may be that the EBAY app is behind this. My other front running theory is that it is my rather larger 40G iPhoto library and iPhoto being up is the source of the freeze.

besides the last instance, the problem with picture drawing appears after time machine backup.

I was able to get the server status widget back on line. First I tried

Terminal window: sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.servermgrd.plist [return] enter password from post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3193044?start=0&tstart=0 but the widget still would not respond. I then tried allowing the system setting "Remote Apple Events" based on http://www.perceptiveautomation.com/userforum/viewtopic.php?t=7135&p=43662 and that did the trick.

VNC and server widget solved so far.

I still have to solve the iphoto errors and the paused cursor problems and the system crashing issues.
