How do I reinstall iTunes without losing my iPhone data, syncs, settings?

When I try to update the IOS software on my iphone it will not complete, when I do it on another machine I can update the IOS software. I want to migrate my data from Itunes to an external drive, uninstall Itunes on my macbook pro. Then reinstall a freash copy of Itunes move my data, music and settings.
