Q: Installation of softwre update 2.1.3 on XP
Currenty running ASU 2.1.1 on XP. Got promted to update to ASU 2.1.3. When installing ASU 2.1.3 I get the error message "The feature you are trying to use is on a network which in unavailable"; asking for a correct path to the ASU.msi file. This message persists even after having made sure the correct path is given.
In another attempt clicking directly on the ASU 2.1.3-smi file the installation runs until I get the error message " the older version of ASU cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group".
in a last attempt I tried to use the Add/Remove facility in XP to remove the old version but get the response "the installation source for this product is not avaialble. Verify that the resource exists and that you can access it."
I have come ot an end. Any suggestions on how ot resolve this?

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on 25 June 2010. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC.
Now to get Apple Software Update back ... are you running any other Apple Software? If so, the easiest way to get ASU would be to uninstall one of the other software packages (like iTunes or QuickTime) and then reinstall the package using an installer from the Apple website:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/
(The reinstall should also reinstall ASU for you.)
