Why would i use Facetime over Skype?
If i am restricted to using Facetime with wifi why would i not just keep using Skype?
What are the benefits of using Facetime over Skype.

You can use whatever you like.
So are there any benefits using FT over Skype? Whats the whole big thing over Apple introducing FT to a standing ovation?!
A 10% permanent Tax Credit...your gutters cleaned twice a year...just a few of the benefits available 😎
If you like Skype, use it. I've used both and the Facetime experience is soooooooooooooooooooo much better in terms of image quality and smoothness of operation. Connecting with my grandaughters via Facetime between my iPhone and their iPad 2 was way cooler, easier, and loads more fun than Skype.
Thanks for your reply. My friends were saying exactly the same as you.
Are they both restricted to wifi only? Or can i use skype with other connections like 3g?
Cheers
Why not check with the folks who run Skype and find out? There should be info with the Skype App or on their website.
It seems that skype has more flexibility with connection ie it can use 3g and FT cannot. Also Skype can use various different platforms ie iphone 4 to windows which FT cannot.
Thanks
Use both. Facetime integrates with your contact list and phone application and, when the connection is decent, provides much better audio and video than Skype with very rare drop-outs or disconnects -- FaceTime is point-to-point video-calling. FaceTime also does not require the FaceTime client to be running to receive a call, a feature that saves batteries.
Skype, on the other hand, supports more platforms (esp. mobile), provides IM, a contact list in the cloud, and Skype-to-phone and long-distance calling features. However, to receive incoming calls, the Skype client needs to be running and connected, costing you battery power and some data usage. Skype also uses a peer-to-peer routing model which sometimes results in spurious disconnects and degraded audio and video (when peers resign suddenly).
Apple's iMessage (check their site on iOS 5) will add the IM features of Skype (without the need for persistent connections).
I would avoid running any video-chat over 3G unless you have unlimited usage, however, as it's a huge bandwidth hog.
There's a place for both.
Great reply.
Appreciated and Thanks
Basically you can use skype when ever but if you ask me i prefer factime when i am home because the video quality is so much better
Thank you
However, Skype for Mac is just abysmal (messed user interface, frequent crashes). I would really love if Apple could interface FaceTime with Skype. Let our PC friends use the Microsoft thing, and let us use the Apple's one.
Why are you replying to a thread that is over three years old?
This is a 3 year old thread. why did you bring it back only to complain about a 3rd party product not associated with Apple in any way?
I don't personally use Skype on my Mac, but on my iPad an iPhone it works o.k. I can video chat with people that don't have Apple devices.
With that said, its unlikely Apple would even attempt such a thing since Skype belongs to Microsoft. It would be like Chevrolet attempting to interface with Ford's Navigation and media center system in their cars.
In any case, you can use Facetime with users of Facetime, and Skype with users of Skype. But you can't use Facetime with users of Skype or vice-versa
There is one benefit in my case - use FaceTime with another FaceTime user who does not use Skype 🙂
