I tried your suggestion Friday and the icons have remained where I put them. I shutdown each night so there have been plenty of opportunities for them to realign themselves. Let's hope that's the fix.

It lasted a week. Everything rearranged this morning. 😟

I have the same problem. It first occure in Mac OS X 10.6 (you can aviod this by setting Sort by: Snap to grid) and still occure in 10.7.0/1 and not depend on Finder settings. It makes me angry every restart!

I have found that unchecking "reopen windows when logging back in" at shut down seems to solve the porblem.

And, looking back, the problem only started about the same time as I checked the box (as I'd originally deselected almost immediately after the installation of Lion)

Im having this same problem, this morning all my nicely aranged desktop icons have been rearranged on my desktop in 2 columns on the right hand side. I previously saw a post which said something about arranging by should be set to none, so i tried that and it solved that problem for a few weeks but now its happening again. 'reopen windows when logging back in' was investigated but i found that when using indesign accross a network if i didnt check that box it would screw up all my links accross the network, really badly, it sort of creates an altenative link, so if i reset and check that box the links i just created dont work and it cant find my files. I cant believe Apple havent sorted this problem yet.

I'm having the same problem with both my desktop and my MacAir.... have talked with techies and they have solutions, but none actually work.

I've given up on this,and will need to wait for Apple to fix it. I've tried every suggestion out there -- snap to grid, uncheck reopen windows, deleted every applicable pref file I can think of -- and while they may work for a couple of days, eventually the icons end up on the right side of the screen.

I wish I knew why it only affects my Mac at work. My Mac at home is not affected.

I just hope it stays that way. 🙂

One solution is to buy SwitchResX.

I did it. Every time all my icons are re-arranged by Apple I can go back to my own saved set.

But there should be a warning sticker on Lion. "We might have mission control, launch pad and a huge candy store fore you... but you need thirdparty software to keep your icons in place"

It affects my laptop and desktop at home.

For me, it affects my mid-2010 iMac 27inch i7.

But NOT my mid 2009 Macbook Pro.

Whatever, Apple doesn't seem to care.

I have a friend with the soon infamous "black screen of death".

Apple just doesn't seem to care anymore.

We need to be a million with a problem for it to be a problem.

I've been with Apple for some time. Since the LC.

I've filled bugreport to Apple and it was signed as duplicate, so I hope that Apple working hard on solution this bug. For what it's worth, I have the same problem and it's very annoying. I hope they fix this.

Please wait for Lion 10.7.2 which should be available by tomorrow (Oct 11). It likely will fix this.

I have no word on this, but IMO it is critical that Apple fix it very soon.

You are too optimistic "billearl" – this bug appear also in 10.6 and Apple have never release fix for this system.
