i have a 4 year warranty on mine so i'm just waiting to see what happens before sending it in to see, watching these threads. time machine is their idea so you'd think it would work. i'll be curious what they say. another thread on freezes is here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3232200?start=90&tstart=0 in case you haen't seen that one. so maybe/hopefully we aren't minority as we think? not sure. i may also try to talk with our apple rep.

Adding a data point that I have a new MBP with SSD.  Externally powered hard drive (not-USB powered) for TimeMachine backups.  When the TimeMachine drive is connected and I leave things running, it will freeze when trying to wake from sleep.  If I leave the TM drive disconnected, no problems.

on the lion freeze after wakeup thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/16931894#16931894 PaulSnelling posted this resolve

"My problem is resolved.  For what its worth, and in case anyone else has the exact same issue...  I am running Sophos Home Anti-Virus, and time-machine.  What seemed to be hapening was that when time-machine 'conslidates' its backups overnight, Sophos was scanning the files, and the resulting load was making the machine appear to halt. The resolution was to exclude the backup drive from live scanning - which is perfectly safe since all the files on there have already been scanned.  Seemed to work for me, hope it helps someone else..."

so i am going to try it too. turning off automatic backups solved my freeze issues but i miss the automatic backups. so now i will exclude the timemachin backup volume from the scanning and turn back on automatic backups and see if that allows me to contine freeze free. fingers crossed because i needed my backup the other day and hadn't gotten a backup of the file i needed since it was a word document and i hadn't manually backed up.

This worked for me. i had originally turned off automatic backups, and that worked. now i can have automatic backups back on and i've excluded the time machine external allows me to keep the automatic backups on.
