Q: No audio in FaceTime?

Friend with a new iMac called me on iChat today about a problem he was having. We audio chatted, shared screens, etc., and had no problems communicating. Tonight, he called via Facetime. Picture both ways was fine, but while I could hear him, he couldn't hear me.

I have an iMac 27" quad i7 running 10.7.1. Sound prefs on my end shows that the internal mic is registering sound, and I was able to record my voice in Garageband.

Is there any reason why audio would work fine in iChat but not in FaceTime?

Thanks!

    Hi,

Depends on Mic chosen in Face Time (Video Menu)

May depend on th volume set for that device when it shows in System Preferences > Sound > Input.

    Hello!

Nope, Mic settings in both FaceTime and System Prefs were the first things I checked. All copecetic. Strange thing is, after the FaceTime failure, my friend and I switched back to iChat and were able to old both video and audio chats without problem. Something is funky with FaceTime. Will try deleting the FaceTime prefs....

    Thanks for replying!

I have the same problem. No outgoing audio with facetime. Nothing is muted, in the system preferences sound menu the internal mic level meter is showing that the mic is working. Skype works, photo booth records sound, but in facetime the person I call can not hear me. I have a similar computer to Steve.

I also have the same problem. No outgoing audio with FaceTime. I'm using the internal mic, in the system preferences sound menu the internal mic level meter is showing that the mic is working. Skype works, iChat works, but in FaceTime the person with whoom I communicate (on his Mac or his iPhone) can not hear me. I have an iMac (20", end of 2006) and I'm using OS X Lion 10.7.2.

    Hi,

Is the Mic selected in the video menu ?

(It is not selected in Preferences  like iChat is)

Yes the mic is correctly selected. It is clearly a problem with FaceTime since the capture of sound by the mic is properly working in all other applications. And as a matter of fact, it is not completly off in FaceTime: if I shout 6 inches in front of the mic, the person at the other end ears me a little bit.

    Hi,

IN that case use the Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder and Enter ~/Library/Preferences in the dialogue box that appears.

Find the com.apple.facetime.plist and any associated .lockfile and drag them to the Trash.

    Restart Face Time

    Thank you Ralph.

I tried that an other time but that changes nothing.

For the record, in the room beside, my wife has a slightly younger iMac (20", beginnign of 2008), with the very same versions of softwares and FaceTime is working well on that machine.

I'm experiencing a similar problem on a 15" 2011 MacBook Pro. Sound stops being transmitted while in a conversation without an apparent reason. Like the microphone goes to sleep or something. I then have to restart FaceTime to get the sound to work agian. If I just hang up and call back it will not be fixed.

I am having the exact same problem on my iMac 27".  I'll be talking with my daughter, then my audio dissapears and she cannot hear me. Frustrating and embarrasing to say the least. Facetime is the problem no doubt because I too have checked my mic and it's working fine. Come on Apple, get this thing working, Steve would be embarrased at this lame app.
