Streaming change?

This morning, I went to stream the Adam Carolla podcast. When I click an episode name to play, instead of seeing the usual black screen with the quicktime logo, with a slider bar that allows me to skip to the middle of the stream, I now stay on the list of episodes, and a simple "stop" icon appears next to the episode that is playing. This is in itunes. ***? How do I get back to the old functionality?

I have an unlimited data plan. I do not want to be forced to download something before I listen to it, or stream with neutered usability. I'm in the car when I change to a new podcast, so I can't always download on wifi ahead of time.

Yup, this is a horrible change. I hope it is temporary. If it helps out, I found all the podcasts I would stream at work, are streamable in the free app "Stitcher", complete with pause, rewind, fast forward n' whatnot. Not the perfect solution, as Stitcher seems to be a bigger drain on my battery than iTunes was, but it got me through the work day.

Does anyone know why they did this? It makes streaming almost useless. You get a phone call, back to the beginning. You want to check your e-mail, back to the beginning.

Until this is changed, I will only listen to podcasts that still use the old format(i.e., the Nerdist, ***, Stuff you should know, etc.).

Not only that, I will no longer purchase anything on iTunes until this is resolved.

Arg, I'm not sure if this helps, but I called Apple about the problem Friday evening.

The support rep put me on hold for about 10 minutes while he chatted with multiple supervisors. The answer from them was that this is not a global change, but has to do with the "type" of podcast posted. It seems the content provider may have changed a setting.

Now, I don't know how much I buy into this. It seems like a global change that affects all podcasts that have a certain setting enabled. Here are the podcasts I regularly listen to:

  • Adam Carolla - Streams in episode list
  • Comedy Bang Bang - Streams in episode list
  • Rich Eisen NFL - Opens Qucktime playing screen
  • Lazy Rich - Opens Quicktime playing screen

And so on....

Maybe give it a few days until Apple support is uptrained? Can someone with a service contract try calling in the future? I have no support, but begged and pleaded my way to an answer on Friday.

I will email the podcast creators, to see if they know anything.

I agree with all of the above, functionality with podcasts was why I moved to an iPod, this lead to the purchase of 3 iPods as gifts for family, this lead to the purchase of an iPad. My future laptop will be a MacBook. Without the ability to pause the audio while listening to podcasts, why choose apple? I can get a cheep android phone and use stitcher. This is a competitive edge and apple should hold onto it.

I am with Wizzard Media / Libsyn where Adam Carolla hosts his podcasts. As does the Nerdist, Rich Eisen and a few others mentioned above. We are looking into this issue to see if there is anything we can do on our end - we would like to talk with some of those that are having this problem to find out exactly how you used to get the episodes and what you are seeing now.

Please contact me at rob@wizzard.tv

Thanks for your help.
