Mail Cache

We use GroupWise and our network admin goes through all accounts and deletes any messages that are over 181 days old periodically. I have my GW account loaded into Mail. Does the Mail cache preserve messages that have been deleted from the network account or as they are deleted from the network account they are also removed from my hard drive?
