I use Lion with VirusBarrier X6 and do not experience any problems. It works fine. Be sure to update the VBX6 software regularly.

ClamXav is highly respected, and protects you from just as much malware as Sophos. Just because it's free does not make it bad. One big advantage of ClamXav is that it does not install any kexts, so there's no chance of it causing a kernel panic.

If Sophos is working for you, that's fine, but that's no reason to slam ClamXav.

Huh? There's no command line stuff needed for using ClamXav. It's interface couldn't be much easier.

I hardly "slammed" ClamXAV. I merely pointed out it's deficiency relative to VBX6. Why did you bring up Sophos since I was responding to the VBX6 question? VBX6 offers real-time network flow, signature, and anomaly detecton. I don't think ClamXAV does.. does it?

Where one sees a deficiency, another sees something not bogged down with useless features. VB includes a firewall, for example... umm, why? Most people don't need a firewall, and those who do have two to choose from, built into the OS. You don't need a lot of the fancy stuff in VB, it's just there to make people who don't truly understand security feel like they're more protected.

Simple mis-statement. Used the wrong name.

I have a 2008 MBP and have X6. When I upgraded to Lion I had nothing but problems, kernel panic's, etc. I thought it was Lion.

I completely erased and rebuilt my MBP this weekend and put everything but Intego on it and for 2 days had NO problems at all. I downloaded Intego today, installed it, let it reboot, update, etc and all of my problems came back. When I came out of standby or sleep my MBP became completely unresponsible. 100% CPU, etc. I turn it completely off (every tab, everything) and it goes away.

I wrote Intego's support and there answer is to uninstall and reinstall. Completely worthless. Not one problem on Snow Leopard, but Lion.....hosed.

Since upgrading to Lion, I have had random programs (including Mail and others) going to 100% plus CPU usage, slow down and fan kicking in on a 2009 MBP and a 2009 iMac with fully updated copies of Virusbarrier X6. Another 2010 iMac without Virusbarrier purred right along. After uninstalling Virusbarrier X6 on the affected machines things run really smoothly.

No, because those features are worse than useless, just like all commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac.

It is Intego causing the problems. I know it for a fact. If you go into Intego and turn it on and I mean every single tab set it to "OFF", all of your problems will go away. I have been in contact with Intego support and am testing a beta copy now that "supposedly" fixes a ton of bugs with Intego on Lion. We'll see.

I'm starting to agree with Linc that AV software for a mac really is useless. If they don't get it fixed, I'll be ripping this crap off here.

What you say is true about the cross-platform clamav scanning engine. That's why ClamXav was written, to provide the GUI necessary for Mac users to avoid having to deal with the command line.

As seems to be typical for you, your comments are less than helpful to anyone and are just showing a personal position that doesn't completely resonate with today's internet threats. It isn't about a 'virus' for a Mac, although those are coming, at least according to the 'experts' that track these things, it is about all the other junk out there in the form of malware and other social attacks.

All Mac users aren't as sophisticated and worldly as you position youself to be, and your seeming opinion that the Mac is somehow pure and clean and not susceptable to the icky stuff out there is just a bit out of date.

You do understand that these 'commercial' anti-virus companies spend a TON of money on the front lines trapping and identifying these new threats and keeping their products up to date. Is it just that you don't like the idea of a company offering a service and making a profit in doing it or that you are just so hard core that you refuse to believe that your pristine Mac world can ever be harmed by outside influences?

I believe it is. My web browsers have been incredubly sluggish of late, both Safari and Firefox. Pages taking forever to load and often not loading at all. This afternoon I turned off VirusBarrier X6 through its preferences window, restarted my MacBook and browsing is speedy again.
