MacBook Pro won't read Sandisk SDHC cards since Lion 10.7.1 update

Anyone tried insert the card with the lock pin in lock position??? This is the only way that i can read my Transcend SDHC 16GB Class10.

I have another Transcend Card 4GB class 4 that works fine.

What worked for me was simply pressing as hard as I could on the SanDisk. When I did, it worked! (Nothing else I tried made any difference.)

Update: Although all the failures above still occur I can get the SDHC card to mount via a super cheap freebie USB SD card reader plugged directly into a USB port. This is one of those readers that is sized like five sticks of gum stacked on each other.

This same card that I can mount via the freebie reader still will not mount via the built-in reader or via the SanDisk card readers.

I should also note that I had done both formats and low-level formats on all the cards in the camera and that didn't help anything before doing the above tests.

Had problems reading SD cards after a Mountain Lion update. XQuartz no longer comes with new Macbooks only X11.

If anyone is having problems with an SD card reader, or any connector for that matter, a touch of WD40 on the connector first then inserted in an out of the mac a couple of time should revive any connections. Unless brutal force was used to chew out the connector typically it is just contact dirt that interferes with the voltages, similar to crackle on a dirty volume dial. Additionally on new unibody macbook it seems to me that the backplate helps to ground some of the connectors or at least pushes on a series of small buttons lined along the connectors. Its worth making sure its on tightly near to the connectors else one thing might start talking to another or simply become mute and not talk at all. I have 10.8.3, Mac PowerBook, and I got my 32 GB Sandisk to work without downloads or upgrades. The disk mounted fine, I could see the icon on my desktop when inserted, but a slashed-pencil icon in the upper left corner of the window suggested it was write-protected. It would refuse to copy when I'd drag and drop.

I went to Applications > Utilities > DIsk Utilities, and "Erased" the disk. Be sure to choose Mac OS as your format. It even allowed me to rename it from "No Name." I'm transferring 28 GB of music as I type this, to play in my car.

Oh, and make sure the mechanical write-protect toggle (on the disk's plastic cover, on the left side) is clicked into the up position. This throwback 'feature' takes me back to mini "floppies" and putting tape over the little hole...

I also had this issue, but I solved it with a can of compressed air. Just a few quick bursts of air to the SD card itself and the SD slot, then everything worked normally. Hope your problem can be fixed as easily.

Inserting a 32GB SDHD card, then backing it out a couple millimeters worked right away. Cracked me up it was that simple. Also, used a can of compressed air for blowing off electronic circuit boards to blow out the dust in the SD card reader. Works like a champ now! Isn't this what is called "operator headspace"? open up your finder. in the search type in X11 it will pop up an app with a thumb nail saying X11. click on it and it will open something up saying mac does no longer come with this blah blah blah and it will bring you to the apple website. it has a link to the quarts website where you can download it. so click on the link it shows you and like i said it brings you to the quarts website. it has a link to download it. it will pop up in your download bar section the top right of your screen. once its done downloading double click on it to pop up the instal. you'll have to agree to license and crap like everything else and keep hitting next till it finally installs. then you will have to log out and log back in to make it your defualt it bitterly tells you what to do step by step/ hope this help=] if it did clic helpful so i can get my rank up p[lease

Solved: FYI: Interesting experience with a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) - MD101LL/A - MacBookPro9,2, with Yosemite:

Bought a 16GB SanDisk microSDHC card directly from Amazon.com that wouldn't be recognized in the MBP, though

an 8GB SanDisk microSDHC card I had does work. (w/the adapter which came with the new SanDisk card).

If I put the new SanDisk Ultra 16GB microSDHC card in the adapter, I can read it in a PC. And if I put it straight into an Android phone, or Rasbperry Pi I can read it just fine too.

What solved it was was to clear out the /Library/Launch* directories and reboot. Not sure which one of those things was the needed fix.

This is an issue with dust in the card reader.

Use a can of air, or close your eyes and blow into the card reader.

You should be all good after that ;-)

Dust in reader? Quite possibly, though reading is intermittent even after blowing 😕 Thanks anyway.

Updating XQuartz worked for me. On 2011 MBP in 10.6.8 with SanDisk SDHC 4 GB.

I'm on Mac OS X 10.8.2 with the symptom described and the X11 update fixed it immediately. Applause!
