GarageBand/iPad2 - No sound

This may sound very simple, but here's my problem:

I plug my guitar in to my iPad2 to use the guitar amplifier in Garage Band. No sound comes out of the iPad when I play. I can see the green light above the cable icon in GarageBand, so I know it's getting a signal from my guitar. I have tried switching on "monitor", but to no avail. It looks like a great app, but it can't seem to do one of the most basic things it's supposed to do.

What am I doing wrong?

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.3

After some Googling, I found out you need one of these before it will work:

You shouldn't need something as expensive as that, though for all I know it is worth every penny/cent.

I'm using a iRig but can't get any sound. I can also se the green light over the cable. I'm not really willy to pay 100$ for the jam when I newly bought the iRig. Why dosent the iRig work?

Go to preferences and disable crosstalk protection, now you should be able to hear sound in amp when you enable the monitor option.

I have the same problem:

Fender guitar -> radio shack adaptors -> ipad mini headphone jack.

Play the guitar in garage band amps, see the green light go on - so i know the cables are working.

this is not fixed by monitor ON or OFF and not fixed by turning ON or OFF cross-talk protection.

There is something very stupid on here.....how are you supposed to get sound out of the ipad mini with the headphones plugged in ? Doesnt the ipad mini turn OFF speakers ?

I have seen this question many times - but no one has answered it ! I dont wanna buy and adaptor to play my guitar when there is probably some dumb setting to keep speakers on ????
