Closed captioning is the process of displaying text on a television, video screen or other visual display to provide additional or interpretive information to individuals who wish to access it. Closed captions typically show a transcription of the audio portion of aprogram as it occurs (either verbatim or in edited form), sometimes including non-speech elements.

Closed captioning happens post-processing.

iMovie only hard-encodes titles into the movie.

An example of hard-encoded subtitles would be the Elvish translation in Lord of the Rings. The selectable subtitles are done after the movie is processed.

In order to acheive this you would need another program to do so, such as Quicktime Pro.

Hey man.

Closed Caption? MovieCaptioner seems to work ok for writing your own... though you have to buy it...

Miyu I think exports .scc or .stl files (.scc can be used for closed captioning in certain other programs and .stl can be used in DVD Studio to put in soft subtitles). I haven't had any luck making Quicktime movies with soft subtitles (text you can shut off). Miyu is free but... well...

Depending on what you are using... if you are going to make a DVD, DVD Studio allows you the option of attaching either soft subtitles or closed captioning.

Final Cut 7 allows you to take a .scc file and attach it to analog outputs but you need to buy some stupid video things so it works... (and for some reason it still doesn't work for me...)

I have tried several other programs, like Quicktime Pro, but it seems it only does hard subtitling (you can't shut it off)... I might be wrong... I am actually on this forum right now to post about it to see if I get any answers without buying anything.
