Q: where is idvd on my new mac

iDVD is no longer being offered or supported by Apple.  You can still get it by purchasing a copy of iLIfe 09 or iLife 11 disk at Amazon.com or eBay.com. 

Even though Toast can burn a video DVD it's menus and final appearance can't hold a candle to that what iDVD can produce.  There are just no good alternatitives to iDVD.

Personally, I'd get a copy of either iLife 09 or 11 before they become totally extinct.

I suggest we all go to apple.com/feedback and register our opinions about iDVD.  Despite the move towards non-optical data in whole, therer is a definite long term need for content producers (who lead the way in the Mac community) to record to high end media for public and private presentation.  A conference presentation will not be relying on streaming media.  Someone wanting to preserve and distrtibute a memorial video or a graduation video wants to give out professional looking DVD's, not a link to uTube or Vimeo.

Sure, times and technology are changing.  However, this is NOT comparible to the floppy disk disappearing first on the Mac's back in the 90's or whenever that was.  Eliminating iDVD is more akin to Dish, Direct TV or Comcast saying please switch to streaming your TV shows by March of 2012.  It's too much too fast.  There is a need for "hardcopy" presentation and preservation of our content - in a format that is most universal to the general public.

I would love to add a MacBook Air to my collection.  I'm keeping, however my MacBook Pro because of it's DVD authoring capabilities.  I hope this lasts well into the future and does not necessitate keeping some "extinct" Macs around because of their "old technology" capabilities.  Think different - yes.  Please Apple, think with practicality as well.

I was a little miffed too when I realized that my brand new iMac didn't come with DVD authoring software. But the more I thought about it the more I wondered why I wanted it, except for old times sake. I share everything via social media or the cloud and I've disconnected my BluRay/DVD player and replaced it with Apple TV. (It only gets plugged back in when I want to get one of my old favorite DVDs.) I may still bug Apple for an iLife disc, but will I ever really burn a DVD again? I may not, even if I could. (Seems so weird to say that.)

If you want to burn a movie in iMovie to a DVD with iDVD you can.

It has that option no matter what (iMOVIE11). I wasted 20 minutes for it to "share" via iDVD then realized iDVD is not on my 21" imac. This is flippin' stupid on their part!!!

Hello Eti-Ski.  That was the route in the past.  On the latest OS, "Share to iDVD" is still there.  Problem is, iDVD is not there.  I'm sure the embarassing omission will be fixed soon - or the Share menu will be revised.  I'd rather the solution be to bring iDVD back in the mix!  Apple has turned quite unwise in this regard if they plan to continue an iDVD void.  Hard copy media is NOT dead!  It is vital for content producers!

I agree hard copies are likely to be less used by the masses.  However, there are always occasions when I produce a video for someone else.  I need a disc - preferrably a nice looking one that didn;t cost me an arm and a leg of effort.

Buy the retail disk version of iLife while you can. The price has been increasing wildly.

It worked!  After being on the phone with Apple rep for 20 minutes, they agreed to send me a free copy of iLife 11 disc in the mail.  It took the rep a while to ask around because he was not aware of the issue.  But I persisted and told hime that others were getting it free and I wanted one. 

They also said the same thing that all the others mentioned about it being discountinued which ***** since there really isn't any great software out there to do the job.  But he couldn't give me an answer as to what is being done for those of us still burning DVD's. 

Just to add my experience.  Ive got applecare on my mac and to add insult to injury idvd was listed as being covered.  Got a call back from applecare and was told "we dont support it any more but you can buy something on the mac store"  I was referred to a tutorial for £13.99.   Being mildly annoyed at spending so long trying to do a mundane simple task i emailed apple again expressing my annoyance.   They responded with a generic link to every apple department.   I phoned them and spent another 15 mins explaining the problem and to summarise, was basically told "we dont support it but you could try moviegate on the app store"   They dont support idvd but they support taking more money off you to do what their own ilife products are supposed to do.  My main gripe is the fact imovie etc still has idvd options.   My mother is, or was, a few weeks off buying a macbook pro.  It was her that i was doing the dvd for.  She quite rightly said "if I cant make a dvd of my photos/videos" then a mac is no good for me.  She isnt interested in cloud, uploading to web, adding to itunes etc etc.  Im ashamed to say that I had to get my old sony vaio out and do the dvd via that while my mac sat idle.  This is my first bad experience with apple but its not a good one.  Applecare was a waste of time.  Yes I know apple dont read this, i HAVE submitted feedback but im not expecting much.  Just wanted to vent.  PS west parley is up the road from me!

Youre right, I will be surpised and as mentioned, I HAVE complained via their feedback.   As to achieving something.  I was hoping someone might suggest alternatives or a fix.  Forums are usually pretty good for that.  If I get any joy I will update.

Buy whatever happens to be the cheapest at the moment. They all contain the same version of iDVD. After you install iDVD update it to the latest version from Apple here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1414
