I have to upgrade from OSX to OSX Snow Leopard for school, and I am concerned I will lose all of my information stored on my laptop, and I don't have the backup available. Has anyone upgraded and can you tell me if the information stored in your old system stayed intact? Thanks for any replies.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard shouldn't erase your data, but better to not take that risk without a backup available.
The OS is a major component of a computer. Everything about your computer interacts with the OS. Never do anything with the OS, especially something as complex as upgrading it without doing a backup of at least your data.
In fact you should keep current backups even if not upgrading the OS.
