Low speaker volume when playing midi files in quicktime

Internal speaker volume on iMac (Lion) during Quicktime midi file playback is extremely low.

Playback volume of mp3's in Quicktime is fine.

The midi playback when using headphones also appears to be OK.

Any ideas??

I have the exact same problem. Both the Quicktime plugin for Safari or Firefox and the stand-alone Quicktime 7 play MIDI at extremely low volumes. I found elsewhere recommended to use shift while moving the volume slider on the browser plugin QT. Doing that shows a few extra notches on the scale, but the MIDI playback volume remains unchanged. For the stand-alone QT 7 one can hold down shift and press the up arrow. This does not boost the MIDI playback volume. I also noticed that the volume works fine with MP3 or AIFF.

It looks like Lion has severely throttled our MIDI playback possibilities. I hope someone will post a work around. I just finished putting together an interactive web interface for creative math to MIDI experimentations. And sadly, I can't use it anymore after upgrading to Lion.

I have submitted the following bug report to Apple:

Summary: Web page midi files play very quietly in OS 10.7.2

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Ensure Mac's sound output level is set to maximum.

2. Go to any web page containing an embedded midi file e.g.

http://www.ardacad.co.uk/christmas/carol.shtml

Expected Results: Normal sound level

Actual Results: Very low sound level

Regression:I use a Mac Pro but It also happens on a 2011 Mac Mini running OS 10.7.2.

It does NOT happen in OS 10.4 - 10.6.

I'm having the same problem here, and it's making my life as a music student rather difficult at the moment.

Seriously Apple, can we get a fix to this bug already? The original post was from 8/21, but I've seen people w/ similar problems post to this community forums from as far back as July.

  • MIDI playback thru Sibelius 7 is unbelieveably low, nearly inaudible
  • MIDI playback thru Quicktime yeilds the same results
  • I've seen a workaround to the problem by importing the MIDI file into Garageband, but that's just plain asinine.

This bug alone makes me regret updating to Lion.

Even a hotfix would be preferable in lieu of a major update.

Add another "me too" for posterity, I delayed upgrading to Lion for the longest time because I was paranoid of stuff randomly breaking, and oh look, I can hardly hear my midis, and I NEED to hear midis. I can jack the sound up to Ludicrous Levels, then as soon as some alert plays, my ears get blasted....

I remember my old 10.4 macbook had a whole settings panel for midi where maybe I could fix it somehow, but it seems to have disappeared since then.

one-year-old iMac, Snow Leopard to Lion upgrade, all updates applied.

Please fix this.

We use Macs at our music school, where students come in and use the computers for Ear training. Music training softwares all rely on MIDI for sound playback. So we can increase the system volume, but everytime students make mistakes, they hurt their ears.

We want to TRAIN them to hear properly, not induce hearing loss !
