iTunes could not back up the iPad because the backup could not be saved on the computer

I think I have exhausted suggestions from Apple and other websites. I cannot successfully backup my ipad2 to my Dell Windows-XP computer. Any suggestions?

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.3, actual OS is 4.3.4 - not listed

Did you try deleting your backup? Launch iTunes on your PC and from the menu at the top go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices. Find the iPad backup and select it. Then click on delete back up. Quit iTunes and then Restart the iPad and try again.

Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and slide to shut down. Then hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Connect your iPad, launch iTunes and try again.

First of all, thank you for the helpful directions.

I tried all the above with no success. My Windows hard drive has 429 GB total capacity and 362 GB free space.

iTunes, during step 1 of the sync process, places 18 files under

C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

Through the iTunes menu bar Edit>Preferences>Devices I find no back up listed.

The one curious thing I discovered is I cannot access iTunes "Help" - An error message says iTunes cannot connect to the internet, but all other programs (Outlook, IE, Vipre anti-virus, etc) do have access to the internet. I begin to suspect iTunes has some on-line interaction necessary to complete the backup.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you considered uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes?

Yes, but I never see a backup in iTunes Edit>Preferences>Devices. I have deleted it from my hard drive, restarted, still can't get past that effor message.

This comment confuses me a bit. If you can't see a backup, what did you delete from your hard drive?

Did you try this? This is copied from the support site that Carolyn referenced above in her post.

If the issue persists, try to back up while you are logged in as a new admin user.

Use the steps below if you're not sure how to create a new user.

Windows XP, Vista, and 7

  1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
  2. Open User Accounts.
  3. Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process.
  4. Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu.
  5. Log in to the newly created user account.

You can also try removing the backup file from this folder

Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Place it on your desktop - and see if you can backup then. You said you found this folder earlier. If you move this backup, restart your PC before you try to backup or sync again.
