Use USB cable with third generation iPod?

I have an old 20GB iPod with dock connector (touch wheel and the four control buttons) that works fine. However I can't use it with my Macbook Air, because the cable is Firewire400, which the MBAir doesn't have. I tried a USB connector cable with the MBAir, but got an iTunes(?) message saying the iPod needed FW400.

Is this completely true? When I looked here at the models specifications:

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP99

I see in the Other Options list this item:

Dock Connector to USB 2.0 + FireWire cable M9126G/A

Does this mean that some USB connector cables should allow connecting to my MBAir?
