I pod classic stops working when connected to my Kenwood KVT-516 head unit

My 120GB Ipod Classic stops working when connected to any car head unit thru the standard Ipod cable. It works fine when connected thru a mini plug like the one from my headphones. Why is this happening? What can I do to fix it? Error message says "NOT CONNECTED"
