replacement video card for mac pro (2008)

I need to replace the video card on my mac pro. I have an intel Xeon mac pro (mid 2008, Model 3,1) with an ATI Radeon 2600 video card which occassionaly won't boot up. A service repair shop told me the replacement card for the 2600 is the ATI Radeon 5770 but I noticed that Apple indicated (on their support page) that the 5770 only works on the 2010 Mac Pro's. Does anyone know what the correct replacement video card for my Mac Pro is?

2.8 quad core intel Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

The only official comment:

ATI Radeon HD 5770 Mac Pro pre-2010

And most of the time, take it with grain of salt. But there is one thing about drivers, there aren't any until you get to 10.6.5, has always been a limitation.

Thanks Hatter, I don't think the official Apple comment concerns me since I primarily use my computer for photo and graphics. I also noticed that the 5770 card is no longer shipping and has been replaced by the 5870. I will try to purchase either one of these cards.

And yes, I will upgrade my system to Snow Leopard (finally) now that everyone is going to Lion. I hate messing around with my system when it's working properly. Let sleeping dogs lie.
