If it is a commercial DVD, you have to strip away the copyright protection and then convert it ... Many ways to do the latter, but the former is illegal in many countries and discussion of how to do so is not allowed on this forum.

Actually, as the owner of the DVD, you are permitted to make one copy. You can use Handbrake to make an iPad compatible version of the DVD movie, then move it into the Videos section of iTunes. From there, you can sync it with your iPad.

ASAIK, it is against forum rules to make illegal copies of DVD's. If there is copyright protection, you cannot put it on your iPad (at least not legally). If it is your personal DVD, you can 'rip' it onto your computer and then convert it using Handbrake into a .m4v file which is compatible with your iPad. Additionally, Handbrake has a preset for the iPad so you should just click on that and click start. If you're wondering how you would rip it, (again I am assuming you are not breaking the law here) you would simply find a dvd ripper software to do this. If the DVD isn't protected, any software would work.
