attachments not showing up in mail

Hi i've looked through various forums but still have the below problem

and think that the bug was detailed in January, by another user:

Re: Mail doesn't show attachments

Hello everybody,

all this looks to me like a well known bug, that Apple has not fixed since Leopard -- since over 3 years !

It happens when you access mail via IMAP (or IMAP Exchange) and the server is Microsoft Exchange 2007. Its different from using an Exchange account directly, its the IMAP Exchange server - Apple Mail combo that has these problems.

What happens is that messages that are cached on the Mac are truncated at the end. This causes the contained attachment(s) NOT to show up as a paperclip. If you look at the raw message you see the base64 encoded attachment suddenly end without the proper end-marker. If a HTML text-alternative is truncated it will also not show up.

This happens randomly (maybe server load dependent) to about 2-10% of messages: Rebuild your mailbox, and different (mostly large) messages will loose their attachments.

The messages are always complete on the server: Access the account via Webmail - no missing attachments. Use Thunderbird: everything fine. Access the same account with your iPhone or iPad: all attachments are there (iOS uses a different protocol to talk to an IMAP exchange server)

All of you, please file a bug-reports, complain to Apple or send Mail Feedback

i was wondering if anyone else still has the above bug or has come across this?

I'm using Mdaemon email server - and if i use cmd+y the attachments do show up - just looking for a more permanent solution?

Thanks

Josh

We are still experiencing this bug, and have been for some time. I haven't confirmed that the server is Microsoft Exchange 2007, but it is the GoDaddy IMAP server imap.secureserver.net. I'm running Lion 10.7.3 and Mail 5.2 (1257). The symptom is that base64 attachments are truncated (when you choose View Message source, or if you save as raw message source). When viewed in Mail, the attachment appears to be missing. The message is _not_ truncated on the IMAP server. It seems that the truncation of the attachment happens some time after the message is downloaded. Perhaps (I'm just speculating) as a result of mailbox compression. In any case, the attachments don't get truncated immediately. I'm seeing it now in an e-mail that is 7 weeks old.

I just witnessed this on my wifes computer (Mac OS 10.6.8 with all updates). The server is Exchange 2010. Rebuilding the mailbox fixed the issue for at least one of the messages (may have shown up in others?).

The messages that had the problem were not large (~25 KB). When viewing the raw source of the message, it appeared that the only part of the message that was truncated was the last two lines, which contained the end of content boundary token ("--e89a8ff1ce2666b8d704b9720e06--")

One of her collegues in the same organization has experienced the same problem. I believe he is also using Mac OS 10.6.

I've had this problem for years and it's annoyed the life out of me, I never narrowed it down to Leopard OS and Apple Mail with IMAP as it only happens occassionaly.

It also removes the attachment when I'm sending to people, especially photo's and scanned JPEG.

Does anyone know if upgrading to Lion solves the problem? Otherwise I think it's time to bin the mail client as it's happened once to often now.

I am having a similar problem with Lion, Apple Mail 5.1 and a POP server. Just when e-mails are from the specific sender of Railway company sending me the pdfs of the tickets bought on line. Very annoying. No idea how to solve. The attachment is there if I check mails with a webmail application, but Apple Mail does not see it at all.

Using Apple Mail 3.6 in Leopard (10.5.8). Many eMails with attachments (but not all within one folder) did not show any text, nor any attachments. Changed the settings for Mail with Onyx to "Display TEXT instead of HTML", then the text appeared (had tried before manually for each eMail within Apple Mail with no success). But not the attachments. If I go to "View -> Message -> Display -> Next Alternative", I can go through different attachments, ONE BY ONE. This is a pain to do, and really unacceptable from Apple. From what I read, it doesn't get better in Lion (to which I will have to unfortunately migrate next week, that being the reason I had to switch to Apple Mail in the first place).

If anybody knows a less cumbersome work-around, or if somebody got rid of that problem by upgrading to Lion, I would love to read that. It will make me dread next week a bit less...

Anybody else starting to develop a certain fondness for Windows?

This is STILL not fixed in Mountain Lion 10.8.2 ... How is it this default email client has this problem w/ the most popular business email system? I've got several instances of this and no attachment shows up anywhere on the mail client (changed to plain text, Cmd-Y, etc) but webmail has them displaying inline just fine. A lot of these are occuring w/ an icon in the sender's signature... So frustrating... going to webmail is NOT the solution. (and no, Windows is not an option)

Apple should take care of this issue, by letting it here we help them understand that this has been around since years but nobody hasn't looked at it yet...

I also fired a bug on https://bugreport.apple.com/ with id 20466996, attaching logs and further details..

Unfortunately this is what you get with "consumer support", not so much if compared with an "enterprise support" 😟
