Error: Unable to start SQL Server Express

Hello.

I am using Lion with a Bootcamp (Windows) partition. While trying to install a program for work in Windows 7,....the install stops with an error, "Error: Unable to start SQL Server Express". This SQL install is critical to the installation of this program.

Any ideas why this happens?

As a side note,....I also installed another program that runs on SQL and it worked perfectly.

Any suggestions welcomed.

You posted this here, assuming you run Windows 7 natively.

Not in VM.

And when 'both' (Boot Camp + Parallels/Fusion) it is best

to install programs and updates natively;

I would suggest you ask your VM forum of choice.

An update post today:

Download SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (SP3)...

- in case that is of any use.

Windows on a Mac is 95%, not 100%, and depends upon some Apple driver/chipset support, UEFI instead of traditional BIOS, but generally, same rules apply.

If it works in VMware on a PC then maybe Fusion would work also is all I can guess.

..."Error: Unable to start SQL Server Express"....I also installed another program that runs on SQL and it worked perfectly...I have read int he past that SQL's dont wotk on a VM,...

I run MSSQL 2000, MSSQL 2005, MSSQL 2005 Express and MySQL in VMs all the time. I don't know where or what you read about SQL not working in VMs, but the only issue I have is the hard drives not having enough thoughput to handle heavily utilized SQL databases. That may be why some people have issues with SQL based VMs (or any other disk intensive VMs) but that is often a matter of running the VM on the proper hardware.

Note that if the "SQL Server Express" is Microsoft's SQL Express, then realized that it is a separate product from Microsoft's "full" version of SQL. It sounds like whatever you're installing is trying to install it's own copy of SQL Express and that specific SQL server didn't start properly. You need to check the installer logs of the program you're installing and/or ask the vendor of the software you're installing or their forums. But this is not a Boot Camp or virtual machine issue.
