shuffle won't charge

My shuffle 3rd gen won't charge even though it looks like it will charge. iTunes recognizes it and I can load music. I've downloaded new iTunes, updated ipod software, reset to factory settings, and everything else I could find that might help. Is my batter just dead and this thing is shot? If so, good riddens. I've had nothing but problems with it, mainly with the remote headphones.
