Q: Optical photoconductor needs to be replaced

Since installing Lion my printer utility continues to indicate "optial photoconductor needs to be replaced."

I have installed the latest Xerox printer driver for 10.7, but the message remains.

Xerox support says this is an issue with the CUPS printing configuration and Apple is aware of it.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes?

Well isn't this special.  Just upgraded all of my devices to Lion OS X 10.7.2 and IOS 5 - the same exact problem with the notice regarding the 'optical photoconductor requiring replacement' is still exactly the same.

    No Change whatever.

Is this still the case with everyone else??

Yep, it appears that this is something buried in CUPS code which Apple has not yet fixed.

I suppose our only option is to keep submitting feedback.

On my printer this error was pausing the print queue and I could not print at all.  I had to change it from IPP  printing to  Jet direct to get it working. It still gives the "The optical photoconductor needs to be replaced." error but at least it prints.

Interesting, I just started having this issue on both my Macbook and my iMac - both running 10.7.2  I didn't have this issue prior to today. I believe I can still trick my printer (Xerox Phaser) into printing but the error is sure frusterating. Also, like the OP, the LCD screen on the printer itself indicates no issues/errors.

My Lexmark E250dn can still print, and in fact now the printer receives and prints the jobs I send it without having to click the bouncing printer icon on the Dock in order to make the job process anymore.

The monitor is still indicating the photoconductor error, but it works normally otherwise.

I'm guessing there has been no response from Apple on this matter?

I have the same problem with a Lexmark C543n ( 10.7.2 Macbook Pro) and left feedback.  Printer also complains that the tray isn't full.

All is fine on my Mac G5 running 10.4

Just bought new Oki C530dn and got same photoconductor error with 10.7.2. To get it to work, just selected Generic Post Script driver and its fine, except Duplex printing is not working. Hope Apple fix this soon...

Ha! I just saw the message in my print window, googled it, and ended up here.

Seems from this thread it's not affecting anybody's actual printing, so I don't see it as an "issue" or a "problem"... just a reporting error, so for now I'll just carry on as per...

I'm having the same problem with a brand new right out of the box OKI C610 running LION.

This is such poor engineering.  Why didn't Apple have this worked out earlier... and why are we still waiting?

I also began to experience the optical engine error after installing Lion.  My Lexmark x544n is six month's old.  I called the Lexmark tech support number listed on the printer's website.  Although I dislike remote log-on support, I allowed it in this case.  During their log-on session, they upgraded the printer firmware, installed a new print driver, created a Lexmark "shortcut" on the printer so I could scan to ftp from the printer console, and even created a "scan" folder on my desktop to complete the job.  Error message is gone; scans works better than before, and life is good.

I have a Xerox Phaser 6360DN and get the error message "OPC at end-of-life!" under MacOS 10.6.8 and the error message "optial photoconductor needs to be replaced" under MacOS 10.7.

    Printer is working fine.

I have two of the same exact printers and printing works just fine.  Running Lion. Sometimes the print status window needs to be closed manually(it's supposed to just automatically disappear on its own) because the 'Optical Photoconductor needs to be replaced' message doesn't always go away.

Best thing to do is don't worry about it until a fix is provided by Apple on one of their next updates.

I am also getting the same OPC error on HP 4240 running Snow Leopard. I also saw that there is a HP update at least for Lion yesterday.
