I also found trouble with the same message. Though in my case I reckon it was the cable itself. Why: I change the cable and then it worked. Cable did not appear daaged nor corrosed. Hopefully this experience will help someone.

In the mean time many people have hacked around this charging issue by slowly sliding the USB into its port, as soon as your phone starts charging leave it (half in). Takes a few goes if you twitch a lot.  Hope that help you out.

    hi every body

I fixed the error charging is not supported by this accessory,, this comes from the update installed by WIFI.

to solve this problem, you need to restore your idevice by itunes and cable only. have the last version of itunes, connect your iphone and make restore, this will take more than 30 minutes, after that you could use your iphone normally.

I've cleaned the connector, replaced the recharger with an Apple recharger, charged from electrical outlet and on WiFi and still "charging is not supported with this accessory"!! However, a third party generic charger from Best Buy does work......but I frequently leave it at work and am out of luck at home.

What gives? Maybe Apple should buy their recharger from a third party!!!

I am losing patience with Apple......maybe I should buy a Samsung cell phone!!!

Does anyone have a real solution or know what the problem is?

I had this problem just now. Error message when trying to charge. I had my iphone 5 plugged into a usb hub and I had a logitech wireless usb receiver plugged directly into my imac. I simply removed the receiver and plugged it into the hub and then plugged the iphone cable straight into the imac's usb port (ie swapped them over) and then the phone charged, no error message. So it could be becaise the iphone doesnt like the hub (although this hasnt been a problem before tonight) or the wire;ess receiver is interfering somehow. Not sure but its fixed.

Is it a powered hub?  Maybe the iphone 5 wasn't getting enough power when plugged into it.  As I said before, we haven't seen any problems since getting a more powerful USB car charger.

I have now confirmed that my problem is with the hardware as none of my connectors work properly yet they all do work. Charging and updating takes hours but it is possible I still get the message Charging is not supported from this device.

I just got a second hand iPhone 3G and I was thrilled... But when I plugged it in to a USB it said 'charging is not supported with this accessory'. After a while i became very annoyed and it became increasingly difficult to charge my phone. After a while I realised my charger was a fake and found a real one in my basement. I now works fine! So make sure your charger is real before you start doing anything drastic. Good luck!

I had this issue and fixed it by simply changing the phone from one  USB port on the computer to another whilst Itunes was shut down.  There were a few more random error messages that came up but just pushing through them (as they were irrelevant - including one asking or me to restore the phone to original setting (which I did not do)) had it all working in couple of minutes

Ok now Im getting this same popup message on my Iphone4.  It began as soon as i upgraded to OS 6.1.2!  I use a powermat to charge my phone in the home, no issues there - but the powermat case that the iphone is encased in has a different connection (like a tiny USB port).  When driving however I have been fotunate to use a car phone charger from an old motorola phone because it has that same small connection/cord.  Been doing this fine for two years until the recent upgrade and the ANNOYING message.  I have tried the 'hold down button etc.' solution to no avail.  When will Apple fix this obvious issue with the OS?  I'm screwed now when Im on the road with a low battery.  And using any gps application is out because it will drain it.  So i am forced to either buy the apple car charger (and hassle with swapping the powermat case on/off to charge) or simply not expect to use or charge the phone in the vehicle.  Very frustrated.

There is no obvious issue with the OS. There is an obvious issue with your hardware; a broken or dirty dock connector or a defective cable or with your after-market charger.
