May 8, 2012 4:35 AM in response to Lawrence Finchby christopherfromstanmore,OK
All arguing aside. I got the same problem after updating to os5.1.1
After reading various stuff on this and other sites I decided to try restoring my iPhone to factory settings. I felt this would test if it was a hardware or software issue.
I therefore did this and following the prompt backed up my phone before the reset.
The phone went through the restore process, during which it displayed the 'charging not supported' message. It then restarted and restored from my last back up.
iTunes now tells me that my phone is up to date (even though I thought I'd restored it to factory settings - nut hey I'm not very good at this stuff).
The phone then started charging normally.
Now it has gone back to 'charging not supported...'
I did all this without unplugging the charging lead.
Retried 'restoring' iPhone to factory settings and set up as 'new' iPhone
It is now charging but I have to reset all the apps and music etc. settings.
What a pain.
But this says to me that it's a software issue.

As I started syncing music and a video the charging not supported message reappeared.

iPadAnd 2 more % points. Added this to make sure I wasn't imagining it.
I won't be giving an update on every battery charge increase - too exciting for some.

May 8, 2012 4:56 PM in response to Lawrence Finchby natNever,Mr Finch, perhaps using your 40 years experience and the word "dirt", you can explain how my iPhone suddenly start charging normally when I switch WI-FI off.

May 8, 2012 8:17 PM in response to natNeverby beckmank,OK, here's the problem I'm having. Just got a new iPod Touch 4. Charges great when plugged in the wall or my computer. I have an iPod cable in my car that allows me to play my iPod through a frequency on the radio. When I hook up to this cable in the car, I get the "Charging is not supported" error, and I can't play my Touch. HOWEVER I know it is not the cable - my old Nano is playing just fine. Does anyone know how to fix this one?

May 8, 2012 9:26 PM in response to beckmankby natNever,Yep, Mr Finch is going to tell you that you need a dry toothbrush and clean dust from your just un-boxed iPod Touch 4.
In reality Apple needs to fix some bugs in latest iOS that make some charger environment (charging in the car, charging with non Apple charger, etc) not working and showing "Charging is not supported"

May 9, 2012 2:57 AM in response to natNeverby christopherfromstanmore,I don't think there is anything to be gained form having a go at Mr Finch.
My iPhone is now charging properly from myMac.
This is after all the stuff I did previously and I thinkfrom what and how it all happened that a little time spent waiting to see adn it would have sorted itself out.
It went from 'charging not supported' to proper charging (no warning message) without me really doing anything. I don't think I needed to go through all the resetting.
So my advice - give it time.
Cheers

iPadUPdate on this.
The warning message is back. Not sure how long it took.
Phone still seems to be charging

May 9, 2012 5:07 AM in response to beckmankby Lawrence Finch,If it's an older charger in the car it is probably not compatible with the iPad. Many older chargers used the Firewire protocol; this is not supported on any iDevice beyond the original iPhone.

iPadSorry to be boring but unplugged phone 10 minutes later plugged it in again and no warning message.
I don't know now. Is it a bit of grit rattling around in there some where? Or is it software?

May 9, 2012 11:33 PM in response to christopherfromstanmoreby sdyjigme,I have a 3GS and an iPad 1 and was just struggling with this. My new iPhone 4S charges just fine. I had the same error message on both tonight and tried them both on the wall charger and connected to my MacBook Pro and still got the same message. I then switched them to airplane mode and they are charging fine.

May 11, 2012 8:13 AM in response to natNeverby jnthnwd,I had never seen this warning message on my 2 year-old 3GS until today, when it upgraded to 5.1.1
The message appears when the phone isn't physically connected to anything-charger or USB to Mac.
Some bug fixing is needed.

May 11, 2012 9:07 AM in response to jnthnwdby Lawrence Finch,First try cleaning the bugs out of the connector on the bottom of the phone.
