I know there's some BitCoin mining thing going on out there. I don't use BitCoin (that "universal" currency used more often for underground, not traceable, transactions). I don't really know anything about it... or what BitCoin mining is... but I'm not even sure how the original poster would know they had something unless they received some sort of alert. I didn't spend all that much time looking into it as it's not something I'm really familiar with.

Using google I found a little bit... http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/researchers-find-malware-rigged-with-bitcoin- miner/8934 .

According to the last part of the article, it uses ftp. If this is true, I'm guessing that you can just turn off file sharing and that will keep your data from being sent.

On the above article was a lot of links and this was one of Symantec's links http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/all-your-bitcoins-are-ours

If you can find and delete the infostealer.coinbit file then you should be ok.

You might be able to stop the process in Activity Monitor if you search all processes.

I hope this helps solve the problem.

Nothing can be installed without you knowing it. Even MacDefender - perhaps the most successful malware in the history of the Mac - had to convince the user to follow through on the installation. The best it could do was download and launch the installer.

Java and JavaScript can be used to do some sneaky things, but neither has direct access to the file system, so neither can install an executable file somewhere where it can run automatically and do harm.
