Library too big for my iPod

Hi,

I have a 30GB iPod Photo with color display and my music library is about to become too big for it. I'm sure I'm not the first to reach this point. Can anyone help with tips / thoughts / best practices on what to do in this situation? Managing it all manually with playlists must be a pain with 30GB of music. I assume there have been threads before on this topic or that there might even be a nice support article from Apple out there somewhere. I've had a look around and haven't found anything myself so far. If anyone can point me in the right direction please do so.

Thanks,

Scott.

Hi,

To answer the questions:

1. My music is in MP3 format. I uploaded my collection using iTunes at "Higher Quality 192 kbps" so the file sizes are big - usually over 4 - 8MB a song.

2. Yes I've used Smart Playlists.

Seems there may not be a magic answer. I thought that there must have been discussions on this topic before and people would have advice like "Don't do it manually" or "Setup your smart playlists this way as it's the easiest way to maintain" etc. If anyone has any good advice or can point me somewhere please let me know.

Thanks,

Scott.

No such thing as “ too many songs”. :-D User uploaded file

See: How to Transfer Music Between the Computer and iPod
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

Manage the iPod either Manually or via Selected Playlists.

Hi Scott.

I note that you are already using maximum compression (Mp3). I'm not sure if other options compress more - I don't think they do. AAC might though.

How about reducing the bit rate to 128 kbp? You may not notice that much difference in quality. If you don't like the results you can alway reload at 192 kbps. Ok, so you won't be any better off than you are now, but if 128 is ok for you, then that should enable you to squeeze some more songs in.

if u still want all ur songs to be on ur ipod, you will need to convert them to lower quality files. 192 kbps for mp3 is unnessecary, 128 kbps mp3 is cd quality.

google audio converter, then convert your songs little by little (dont convert your whole library its gonna take forever).

choose 96kbps mp3 audio for output, that is almost same as cd quality, with no hearable differences.

importing at 192 does give you a higher quality file than 128 but as you have found out it also takes up more space.

How much higher the quality is is a personal thing. Most/many people cannot discern any difference between the original CD and a 128 bit file others can. You just have to listen for your self and come to that concusion based on your own hearing/perception
