How to fix black screen hard freeze MBP 2010?

My 2010 MBP has a lock up issue, at random times the screen goes to black, if there was sound playing it gets stuck in a loop and the keyboard lights stay on. Nothing works, and the only way out is to do a hard boot by pressing the power button. This is random, at anytime doing anything, I could just have one safari window open or one firefox window open. The only way that I can recreate the problem is by using iDVD, it will crash as soon as I have a movie ready and press the burn button. Anyone have any ideas? I have already tried resetting the SMC and nothing. The problem will always comes back. Please someone help, I am falling behind at school because of this! Thanks!

Welcome to the crowd. This problem is so wide spread, I am surprised that Apple can not fix this problem,

or if they are please inform you tech support at your Apple stores. They seem to be clueless.

I have worked with Apple computers since 1985 and have never seen anything this bad.

So I do not have any ideas of how you can fix this. I am like you, I can't afford to take my computer in and leave it for several days. So as you say, we live with it the best we can. I have come to a point that I am saving

my files every few minutes. Really effects the creative part of what we do as a New Media development company. I hope someone out there has cracked this problem. I am going to call my Apple Care support today,

and put the challenge out to them. The key is to document this problem if you do have a warranty that is still in force and Apple Care. Its hard to imagine that I have an old Macbook Pro that is more dependle than this 1 year old Macbook Pro. I hope more people get on this issue and voice their concerns and solutions.

Take care,

I spoke to Appple Care Technical support and they did not seem aware of this growing problem. I directed him to this site and online. There are numerous problems similar to this one even back in 2009.

We did reset the SMC and P Ram. The apple store service center did the same thing back in April.

It obviously did not fix this problem. I had another screen black out this morning. The computer does not shut down, the key board is still lit and I can hear the drive running. I notice it was very hot.

The technician did say that he thinks this is a hardware problem and I agree.

I am going to drop off the computer today, they want to work on this problem and it will take a couple of days.

Sorry to say, this is something beyond our control.

Good luck and thanks for your reply.
