Could not open key

Dear all,

I've spent hours trying to install iTunes 10.4.1 for Windows 7, 64bit. I've tried all suggestions on the Apple Support site, but nothing works. I'm still getting the following error:

Could not open key:

UNKNOWN\Components\DA4BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\7E577B2224C65CF4E801A9E52375D B49.

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support peronnel.

Please please, help me!

many thanks in advance

These ones are tricky. But the following instructions are worth a try.

First do a complete uninstall of iTunes and related components (but don't reinstall just yet), as per the following document:

Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

a. Launch regedit (Start >> Search Programs and Files >> type Regedit and open the regedit that comes up.)

b. Access the following Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData \S-1-5-18\Components

c. Perform the following actions

i. Right Click on Components Folder

ii. Select Permissions

iii. Select Full Control and Read Permissions options

iv. Select Advanced Button

v. Select Owner Tab

vi. Select to Change Owner to the Administrators

vii. Check the option “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects”

viii. Select OK when prompted that it may not change all.

ix. Select Apply

x. Select Apply again

xi. Exit the Registry Editor

Now try reinstalling iTunes again. Does it go in properly this time?

Thank you b noir - I was working since two weeks - I tried everything - mainly all your posts helped me a lot to fix my problems and this one was magical - amazing but i'm afraid now since I chanced the owner of the system from the administrator to the creator - will it have any security impacts on my PC later ?? Should i change them back as they were before i installed I-tunes ??

I have to admit I was wasting my time trying for several times to install and uninstall again iTunes.

- could not open key unknown components itunes verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support -

Unfortunately I was also twice in a Genius bar, where I live in Rome, an Apple ridicolous invention to show how low informed are the "geniuses" to teach you what to do when you are lost, without any solution.
But the solution is YOUR!!!

Thank you!
