Converting audio files to podcast format?

Is there any way I can convert an audio file to podcast format? So that it will continue where I left off rather than starting all over again. I am recording lectures on my iphone to listen to them later and I can't figure out how to convert them so they don't play like songs in my playlists.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

You don't need to convert your audio files, you just need to change a simple setting.

Assuming they show up in the "Music" library, do the following:

Select the track and Get Info (right click / from File Menu / or Command I)

Go to the Options tab

Check "Remember Playback Position"

Now when you listen to the track it will start where you leave off.

You can do this for music as well – it's handy for very long tracks, say, in classical music.

That behaviour is within the program which plays them, rather than the file. Your best best would be to play them in an audio editing program like Audacity (free) or Amadeus Light (in the Mac App Store) which can add markers to the file so that you can return to a specified place later.

Where are you seeing the behaviour of picking up from where it left off? I converted the Media Type of a file in iTunes to Podcast - it moved to the Podcasts section but still always started from the beginning. (If you want to try this, select the item in the Music list, get info, click on the Options tab and set Media Kind to Podcast.)
