If you want to get intenet from a cell phone company, then you would need 3g.

All iPads can be ordered with or without 3G, it's an option.

If your father has a WiFi network in his home, the WiFi only iPad will be fine for him. If he has no WiFI access at home then you will need 3G with a data plan.

Just so you are totally clear on this, all iPads have WiFi capability. But you still need to connect to a WiFi network for it to work. If your father does not have a WiFi network at his house, the WiFi only iPad will not work. It will work anywhere that there is a WiFi network that he can connect to.

I'm sorry to make this confusing. you are in Australia I assume? If your hub is a wireless hub the WiFi iPad will work. From what you are telling me, both of computers have to be connected to some device in order to access the internet. With a WiFi connection which is the way the iPad works - you need WiFi.

I can take my laptop anywhere in my house and it is not plugged into any device and I pick up the wireless internet signal from my router which is connected to my cable modem. Same thing with the iPad. No wires - no cables - nothing plugged in and I get the internet. Unless you can connect to the internet without being plugged into some sort of device, you better ask before you buy the WiFi only iPad. I just can't determine if you are using a WiFi network in your home with the information that you have given me so explain your home setup to whoever you talk to before you choose your iPad.

If whoever told you that you need 3G is someone that knows your home internet setup, then they are probably correct about which iPad you will need.

If I understand correctly, you are using a 3G usb modem connected directly to your computer which is providing your laptop with internet access. You will need a wifi connection to use the iPad wifi version. In order to get Wifi, you would need a router. You would need a modem (which would get internet from the service provider) and connect that to your router. The router will have a SSID (don't worry about what it stands for but it is the name for your wireless network). You would need this SSID to connect to your iPad (you will see a bunch of them under Wifi on the iPad). I hope this helps make things a little more clearer.
