Why can't my brand new mac read a DVD R created on a PC?

My mother just bought an iMac with Leopard and when she tried to view a DVD+R with photos on it, it said the disc is blank. I looked at it on my mac and I can see them just fine. The disc was created on a PC. Is she missing a plug-in or something?
