Recording woes/m audio fast track usb+logic 9

I'm new to Logic (and recording in general) and I just hooked up an M-Audio Fast Track USB and a condener mic to my 13" MBP, and I'm getting a ton of hiss, low volume, and playback on only one side of my headphones. I've tried all sorts of combinations of input types (mono/stereo) and output types (mono/stereo 1-2) and still have the same problems. I think it's only on one side of my headphones because Mics record in mono if I'm not mistaken, and I have the same problem when I plug my guitar into the guitar input instead of using the mic. is there any way to split it or pan it? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I believe condenser mics need phantom power. If you look on the back there should be a switch that says "48V" next to it. Make sure it's on. That should fix the hiss/low volume.

On the audio track you are trying to record it should be set to "Input 1" and "Stereo Out" for the input/output (respectively). If instead it says "Input 1-2" then you mistakenly created a stereo track and you need to change it back. That should make it so that it plays in both headphones. The only other possibility is that you unknowingly panned it to one side.

I'm not quite sure about what's going on with your guitar. Are you trying to record them both at the same time? If so, make sure that you have the mic plugged into input 1 and the guitar into input 2 on your M-Audio device.

No worries, that's what I assumed. The worst thing is I'm sure if I had it in my hands I could figure it out. Anyway, I've got a couple more ideas:

1) Did you try using the audio jack on your computer instead of the monitor output on the m-audio device?

2) You said that you hear the mic in one ear. Do you hear the guitar in the other ear? Maybe the "direct monitor" is set up to pan the mic to one ear and the guitar to the other?

3) The headphones you plugged into the monitor, are they quarter inch or are they eighth inch with an adapter? If you're using an adapter, make sure it's a stereo adapter otherwise you would hear everything in one ear.

and when I select stereo output it automatically switches to output 1-2. Is that normal? If not, is there a way around that?

thank you!

Why would you want a way around it, there has to be two outputs for stereo, 1=left, 2=right.

Set the mono track's pan control to the middle position.

You're using headphones or speakers plugged into the M-Audio?

Make sure Preferences/Audio "Universal Track Mode" IS selected.

You know, the manual could help you clear up a lot of the basic operation problems you're having.

There's no way asking 1001 questions on here or any other board is going to clear all of this up. My suggestion is to start reading now, whether it be the manuals or books on DAW recording. You have to get an understanding of the basics or you will continuously butt your head against the wall. Once the basics are cleared up it's much easier to figure out problems. The manuals are 10 times better than when I learned the program and are a worthwhile read.

OK, wether I have just my mic or both my guitar and mic pluged in, all of my output is coming out of my right headphone channel. Universal track mode is seleceted, and toggling the direc monitor button makes no difference at all. I'll try using my audio jack for the output, the only other thing I can think of is maybe my headpone adapter isn't stereo....which makes no sense because I've used them with logic before.

You won't hear is stereo just monitoring it becuae you're only in one side... but you should hear hear both sides on playback... no?
