On each Mac... Click on the Apple Icon > About this Mac > More Info > Select Firewire in Left Column ...
That will tell you if it is Firewire 400 or 800
Once Known you can then Purchase the correct cable...
Hi i have now found that information thank you, It says up to 800 Mb but how do i know how many pins as some say 6 to 9 etc and i cannot get this info from my Macbook Pro as the screen has been damaged. Sorry for needing further info. Many thanks for the help so far though it is very much appreciated.
My 800 FW cables have 9 pins. Have a look at:

But it's probably not much help.
