I couldn't open oald8 (Oxford Advanced Leaner)

Although I 've used oald8 for a long time, I couldn't open it recently. I thought the problem came from oald8, I reinstalled oald8 but it still doesn't work. When I click to open, it is said that " oald8 quit unexpectedly". I have Quicktimeplayer ver 10.0, what should I do to open oald8? Please help me. Thank you.

Have you found a solution for this?

You have tacked your question onto a VERY old thread. You may find that starting your own NEW Question (top right of this page) is the best way to get your answers.

Tell us a Story - with a beginning, a middle and end. We need to understand everything that you know and have experienced.

If this issue is new, tell us what immediately preceded its onset - add software, upgrade or update? New equipment?

Dear Rattha,

Could you please try this:

On the step 5:

First, click on Finder symbol, you will see the searching tool. Type "Library" on there then press the space bar, choose " Filename contains Library". Finally, open Library and find References folder, click on it and find "oald8".

The first step should look like this pictureUser uploaded file

Hope that they would help you.

I have the same problem. I have done everything from step 1 to 4 but I don know how to do step 5

5. delete the oald8 user preference directory ~/Library/Preferences/oald8 . Please note that '~' represents your home directory, and that this step may need performing for each user who has used the dictionary

Where can I find the oald8 user preference directory ~/Library/Preferences/oald8??

Please help!!!

Please try the following:

In Finder, open a new Finder window (File menu > New Finder Window)

Select the "Go to Folder..." option (Go menu > Go To Folder...)

This should pop up a text entry box to give a folder location.

Copy and paste the following into that text box, and press enter:

~/Library/Preferences/oald8

That should take you to that location in your new Finder window.

Hope that helps!

If anyone using Mac Os X Lion 10.8.2 like me, I could not find the folder Library/Preferences. Simply because it doesn't exist in my computer. Therefore, please skip this step 5. You don't need to delete oald8 user preferences thing.

Once you move the 2 flash files in the "Oald8_FlashPlayer10_Patch.zip" to Folder Contents/MacOs/Plugins, you can just simply run the app by clicking the app icon (oald.app) and it worked for me! Hoorayyyy 😍

Good luck guys!

Thanks for suggestion, it works with me.

For another problem, can anyone help me understand this issue? Thanks for advance.

"I met some issues recently on OS X 10.10.1 with this software. I’m able to open it to function but when I closed it by red x button at left-top corner of application. It closed application well but I cannot open it again by clicking it in /Application/oald8. If I shut down it by windows + Q or from main menu, everything still works. "

Hi Katie

Sorry for the trouble with your OALD.

This sounds like a problem caused by an update to Adobe Flash Player.

Could you please try the following:

1. Download http://www.oup.com/zip/elt/Oald8_FlashPlayer10_Patch.zip and save to your Desktop, and double-click to extract the contents - it contains two files, flashplayer.xpt and Flash Player.plugin

2. In Finder, right-click on oald8.app and select "Show Package Contents"

3. navigate to the directory Contents/MacOs/plugins

4. move the two files from archive "Oald8_FlashPlayer10_Patch.zip" to this plugins directory

5. delete the oald8 user preference directory ~/Library/Preferences/oald8 . Please note that '~' represents your home directory, and that this step may need performing for each user who has used the dictionary

6. restart OALD 8

If that doesn't work, please get in touch with our support people: eltdict.help@oup.com
