Might be a corrupted preference file.

Select your Home folder in the Sidebar of a Finder window then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.

From the Preferences folder look for a file similar to this:

com.oxfordadvancedlearner.plist or com.oald8.plist

If you find it, move it to the Trash.

Restart your Mac. See if that helped.

I followed your instructions to solve the problem but I can't move the two files from "Oald8_FlashPlayer10_Patch.zip" into the plugins directory.

Please try the following:

In Finder, open a new Finder window (File menu > New Finder Window)

Select the "Go to Folder..." option (Go menu > Go To Folder...)

This should pop up a text entry box to give a folder location.

Copy and paste the following into that text box, and press enter:

~/Library/Preferences/oald8

That should take you to that location in your new Finder window.

I have the same problem with Katie. But after done everything step by step, now I can use my oald8 again.

But sometimes I don't find the transcription of the word and I don't find any choices to repeat the sound. I only can find it by using online oald8. What must I do?

Now that I installed my Oald8 done and it works. But when I close it and open it again. It does not work. Nothing happens.

And when I use "Force Quit" quit it. I can open it and it works.

I have up to step 3 but in step 4, I could not drag the two files to the plugins folder. A circle with a dash like a road sign comes up, showing I could not put anything on the CD.

Any tips on moving the two flash files? Should I move the oald8 and oald8.data files from the CD into the applications folder first?

It works now! For future users with similar problems, oald8 and oald8.data should be in Applications and you work with that. Not with the CD which is read-only. Thank you Katie_Hoang for creating this post!

If anyone using Mac Os X Lion 10.8.2 like me, I could not find the folder Library/Preferences. Simply because it doesn't exist in my computer. Therefore, please skip this step 5. You don't need to delete oald8 user preferences thing.

Once you move the 2 flash files in the "Oald8_FlashPlayer10_Patch.zip" to Folder Contents/MacOs/Plugins, you can just simply run the app by clicking the app icon (oald.app) and it worked for me! Hoorayyyy 😍

I think u r so lucky, because I have using MacOSX Lion 10.8 and before I had deleted the oald user preferences, nothin worked. Just click Go on Menu, select Go To Folder and paste ~/Library/Preferences and click Go. U r gonna find out the oald8 user preferences. 🙂 .

Sorry for the trouble with your OALD.

This sounds like a problem caused by an update to Adobe Flash Player.

Could you please try the following:

1. Download http://www.oup.com/zip/elt/Oald8_FlashPlayer10_Patch.zip and save to your Desktop, and double-click to extract the contents - it contains two files, flashplayer.xpt and Flash Player.plugin

2. In Finder, right-click on oald8.app and select "Show Package Contents"

3. navigate to the directory Contents/MacOs/plugins

4. move the two files from archive "Oald8_FlashPlayer10_Patch.zip" to this plugins directory

5. delete the oald8 user preference directory ~/Library/Preferences/oald8 . Please note that '~' represents your home directory, and that this step may need performing for each user who has used the dictionary

6. restart OALD 8
