shrink window?

Snow leapard had a tiny little button in the top right corner of most application windows that would shrink/unshrink the top bar of the window to hide extra junk. It was especially useful in ms word where toolbars and menus can take up half the screen.

This button has disappeared in Lion! Now there is a "full screen" button there instead, which is useful, but not the same thing.

Does anyone know anyother way to get that original effect?
