Will A 27 Inch Samsung LED Monitor work on my Macbook pro?

I have a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro and I am not sure what ports it has. I see 2 ports apart from the USB (2 ports), Power and LAN. I am planning to buy a 27 inch Samsung LED monitor for the laptop. Here are the Macbook specs:

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 Ghz

Memory - 8 GB

Graphic - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

VRAM - 256 MB

I have read that even if I buy a monitor with speakers, I won't be able to get sound from them. What are my options if I buy a monitor with or without speakers? Will I need to connect to speakers using USB? The monitor has an HDMI port... in that case what cable will I need to connect the monitor to my MBP?

Thanx in advance for all your help.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Well you are in luck (I think) because the 2009 models actually output sound via HDMI with minidisplay port.**

you'll need to get this Mini DP

http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

and an hdmi cord, and then just plug and play!

** to see if your model is compatible with outputting audio from minidisplay port.

in the comments from MM in Orlando, it says:

The best solution, instead of trying to figure out the date your mac was born and the cut-off, etc...

1. Click on the Apple Icon in the top left corner of the screen.

2. Click "About this Mac."

3. Click "More Info."

4. Click on "Audio (Built In)." *** If you see "HDMI Output or HDMI/DisplayPort Output

- Then you are GOLDEN!!!! If not, you are like me and extremely frustrated

if you're out of luck like me, you can also try to get a miniToslink to Toslink cord, that is if your new samsung led supports it. I run mine into a 5.1 reciever so it doesn't matter if my monitor has one or not.

I have this under audio:

ntel High Definition Audio:

Audio ID: 77

Headphone:

Connection: Combination Output

Speaker:

Connection: Internal

Line Input:

Connection: Combination Input

Internal Microphone:

Connection: Internal

S/PDIF Optical Digital Audio Output:

Connection: Combination Output

External Microphone / iPhone Headset:

Connection: Combination Output

Seems like I am not lucky.

Will there be any performance issues with my graphic card and a 27 inch monitor? I know a couple of friends who are saying that there might be a lag if I use a 27 inch monitor and I should rather go with a 24 inch. Is this true?

Just to clarify this, only MBPs produced since April 2010 have this function. 😉

if you want audio out get this: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H6745ZM/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY you'll only need one of the little converters it comes with. save the other one incase the first one breaks (it's very fragile). put the one with the adapter into your headphone jack, put the other one in the optical input in the monitor. BOOM! it's the same! assuming your tv has said capabilities.

not sure if your monitor will bog down your system however you could always lower the resolution in place of physical monitor size. (however wide screen format is only achievable on the highest setting of my 22" samsung monitor) but it doesn't have hdmi inputs.

I'd say try it! samsung is pretty good at CService in my experience, or make sure the place you get it from has a return policy that's suitable for your needs.
