I have net nanny on win 7 x64 and had high cpu and no itunes store access after the upgrade to10.5. In net nanny I added application exceptions for itunes and for the horrible APSdeamon using the custom application button. On my system the path to the APSdeamon is C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\APSDaemon.exe after that net nanny still works and the CPU is under 10% with itunes running.

I fixed a friends PC recently that had no itunes store access and high cpu. the winsock fix worked and fixed the itunes store problem. It also broke a verizon family security (or something like that) that one was not needed and was uninstalled. The verizon program came on the disk with a verizon DSL modem that had been recently installed.

I also hate itunes and wish apple would act like they even care about the 1.2 billion Windows users in the world. Come on apple, is this itunes app really the best you can do?

Hopefully solved:

I downloaded and installed the most recent version of iTunes two days ago. After deleting APSDaemon.exe on my PC (XP SP3) I no longer have the 100% CPU use problem. APSDaemon.exe would continue running at 100% regardless of whether iTunes was being used or not.

I do wish that Apple would consider allowing iTunes to be installed without the several sync add-ons. I do not use an iPod or any other external device for music or video, and for many of us the additional programs that iTunes loads during boot are unnecessary and can seem to be a bit intrusive. In previous versions I would set the iTunes programs to not run during boot, but iTunes automatically installed a second copy of the files to run during start-up.

For the past several years I have installed iTunes when I needed to redeem a gift card, and I then uninstalled iTunes after downloading purchased music. The iTunes store is one of the last legit sources for downloading music, and I would very much like to use iTunes on all of my computers, but at present the iTunes software keeps me from being a regular customer, and too, several times I considered buying a Mac but I decided not to because of my concerns that the software might be too similar to the iTunes for Windows.

I hope that Apple looks at these forums and that someone will realize that iTunes is good but not the only software that is used on a computer: iTunes should not hog a computer's resources and cause all other software to crash or run slowly.

I also found this problum when I updated to iTunes 10.5.2. The cpu possess around 50%. Now I just untick two option , "Sync with this iphone over wi-fi" and going to "edit"--"preference"--"store"--untick "Always check for available downloads". It seems that the problum is no loger happen.

Anyways, I hope Apple can fix this problum as soon as possible.

winsock reset worked for me also...now APSDaemon.exe runs and syncs my devices without taking up 100% of my CPU cycles. CPU usage is now 4%. XP SP3. Google winsock reset and go to the MS support page. They have an auto fixer you can download. It reset and fixed my winsock problem in less than 5 minutes. After the reboot everything works perfectly. Good luck...

When you ran the command to list all the windsock interfaces, did it have any that weren't in the standard list that MS included in that article? As mine did which is how I realised it was NetNanny "causing" the problem. The actual reset didn't work for me either as the standard drivers were all ok. I bet you have some kind of IP interceptor software installed.

By some weird fluke I happened to read your post about the application exception for iTunes in NetNanny, and it worked!!!! I have been struggling with this for weeks. Thank you SO MUCH for providing the answer to my iTunes Store access problem.

I am so sick of Apple's arrogance! All I want to do is download some music to my iPod. I don't want iCloud. I don't want Safari. I don't want Quicktime. I don't want application helpers buzzing around my computer when I am not using iTunes. I don't want to upgrade to a new version of iTunes every month. I did not purchase my computer to run iTunes!! I wish they would make it simple to opt out of all this crap!
