Oct 21, 2011 3:26 PM in response to RandyODonnellby DLThompson,Did you try adding iTunes.exe as an Application Exception in NetNanny? Wonder if that would help. It was blocking access to the iTunes store and iTunes help for me until I added it as an exception.

Oct 23, 2011 5:08 PM in response to anthaeus1964by rdunn003,Problem solved for me!
I have had this problem for weeks, running Windows 7, 64 bit, 3 gigs of ram. As soon as iTunes started CPU went 100% whether I was playing music or not. Even without iTunes it was running 30-50% cpu.
My son solved this for me, did a refresh of winsock. Here is how you do it. Go to a command prompt and type "netsh winsock refresh" without the quotes.
You will need to restart your PC when done. As of now, my CPU usage is 7-15% with several programs running including iTunes.

Oct 31, 2011 3:00 PM in response to anthaeus1964by BruceBSI,Resetting the Winsock parameters does in fact resolve this issue. However it has to be done correctly and previous instructions on this thread are lacking.
Here are step by step instructions for users running Windows 7. This should work for both 32 bit and 64 bit flavors.
1) Click Start and type "cmd" (without the quotes) DO NOT press enter or Ok yet.
2) Right click "cmd" in the search results at the top of the start menu and select "Run as Administrator". (or press control + shift + enter) Click Yes to the UAC security prompt.
3) In the command window, type "netsh" and press enter. (Without the quotes)
4) In the next prompt, type "winsock" and press enter. (Without the quotes)
5) In the next prompt, type "reset" and press enter. (Without the quotes)
6) Reboot the PC. (Do not skip this step)
7) Enjoy a working iTunes
One should note, that the root of this issue is Apple's programmers. If they would just follow Microsoft's best practices and recommendations for software development, it would be fine.

Nov 3, 2011 2:37 AM in response to BruceBSIby Swimming Paul,Winsock solution worked for me but only temporarily. After a while ( a few hours or reboot) it went back to using 100% of my CPU after a little bit of digging I came across a solution by accident. My antivirus (PC Tools) was undoing all the good that the winsock solution had done. After switching to the free version of avast and re doing the winsock reset all was well problem solved!

Nov 4, 2011 7:09 PM in response to anthaeus1964by bigdogkess,Hey guys and gals. I have been having the same issues with the upgrade to Itunes 10.5 using 100% of my CPU. Apple Mobile Device Manager was using 50% and Itunes was using 50%. I called Apple Care because I was still in my contract period and they gave me the solution - or course I tried to uninstall and reinstall Itunes before I called them which was a waste of my time. Here is how you fix it (I have Windows XP)
Go to Start, Run and type this in exactly: netsh winsock reset
once you do that, you will have to restart your computer and you will be good to go. Why this works I have no idea, but the way they explained it to me was that some "virus" was taking up my IP port and Itunes was fighting with it. By doing the above, you clear out the issue. Trust me, it worked the first time and now my cpu runs at 5% when i tunes is running. Perfect now.

Nov 7, 2011 12:03 PM in response to anthaeus1964by jamesfromeddyville,This also worked for me on WinXP SP3. Couldn't believe it was that easy.
In windows 7, (or XP) click on your start menu, go to accessories, right click on the command prompt icon and choose "run as administrator". Once it opens, type in the following command...
netsh winsock reset
hit enter and it should say something like winsock reset successful now reboot your computer. Is it possible for an Admin to move this answer (Solution ) to the beginning of the thread.

Nov 13, 2011 5:40 AM in response to raymondfromnewtongrangeby deanrd,I have Vista 32bit, I tried the cmd netsh no luck, disabled AV no luck, reinstalled 10.4.1 and was able to sync and backup in 15-20 minute. 10.5 has an issue that apple needs to resolve. I can't update to ios5 until they fix itunes. Anyone else having issues with Vista they've been able to fix?
Thanx - Dean

Nov 13, 2011 6:40 AM in response to BruceBSIby moviepup,I had the same CPU 100% issue since upgrading to 10.5. I also could never get icloud up and running on my Vista 32 Business PC. I am happy to report that I followed the netsh procedure exactly and that solved BOTH problems.
Thank you for the detailed procedure.

Nov 14, 2011 1:59 PM in response to anthaeus1964by tonitiger7,Solved!!!
Here is what worked for me:
I'm running Windows 7. Apple Mobile Device Service was the culprit. You need to stop the service. You will need to re-enable it if you want to sync your ipad, ipod or iphone however, but the process is easy.:
Here is how:
- Disable inWindows Vista/7
- 1
Exit out of the iTunes program if itis open, and unplug the iPod, iPad or iPhone from your computer if it isconnected.
- 2
Click the Windows menu button in thelower-left corner of the desktop screen, and click the search field on thepop-up menu.
- 3
Type "Services" in thefield, and press the "Enter" button on your keyboard to open theServices window.
- 4
Select "Services (Local)"in the Services window's sidebar, and click "Apple Mobile Device" inthe Name column in the Services window.
- 5
Click the "Stop" hyperlinkto disable the program, and click the "X" button in the upper-rightcorner of the window to save and exit.
- Disable inWindows Vista/7

Nov 14, 2011 3:11 PM in response to deanrdby debmck,I also did the netsh winsock reset a few weeks ago which worked fine - but I've just plugged my iPhone in again today after a break and the same problem is back - so it hasn't been a permanent fix! Come on Apple, come to the party and fix it!!!
