my old notebook is a windows 7 machine with a firewire port - I'd like to use this port to transfer files to my new MacBook Pro - is this possible? If so, what are the steps involved?

You cannot use the Firewire port on your PC to transfer files to the Mac.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that Windows has a "Target Disk Mode" or Firewire networking to connect your Mac and PC.
Follow CMCSK's links and use Apple's recommended methods of migration from your PC to Mac.
