Purchased music to flash drive

I've searched all over for this answer and can't find anyone asking the question. I've got Itunes on Windows 7 PC. I have a number of purchased songs in my itunes library that I want to put on my flash dirve to play in the car. I find a number of variations of it but none for my specific problem. I think the pruchased songs don't play because the flash drive isn't authorized. But how do I authorize a flash drive?

If these are not iTunes plus songs (purchased before April 2009), you will not be able to play them except in iTunes/iDevice.

You don't.

Are they copied to the flash drive?

Drag the songs from the iTunes window to the flash drive mounted on the desktop.

I just looked under "get info" and noticed for "kind" it is a Protected AAC audio file. How or why that's the case I don't know. Is there a way to unportect it

Yes, by availing yourself of the iTunes Plus upgrade program. In the article cited by AnaMusic, scroll down to the line "You can view your eligible iTunes Plus upgrade items."

If so then why bother purchasing if I can't listen to it where I spend most of my life; in the car?

As a general rule, if you plan to listen to your songs in non-Apple players, you are much better off purchasing songs in MP3 format, e.g. from Amazon MP3.

MP3 format can be used in iTunes and virtually every other player, program, and device (and car), with no compatibility problems..
