Apple TV (Generation 2) won't connect to wireless network after update

I have an Apple TV (Generation 2) which I configured and was operating fine on my wireless network. I finally followed the prompts to update the software and now I can no longer connect to my network. The wireless network is seen with good signal strength; I am entering the password correctly, but it keeps telling me that the connection is failing. I am able to connect other wireless devices to my network. Tried reset and re-entry of password several times, but still not able to connect.

Welcome to the Apple Community.


  • Make sure the Apple TV doesn't have an IP address of 169.x.x.x
  • Try turning off security on your wifi network (for diagnostics only)
  • Make sure your password only uses standard ASCII characters.
  • Try changing your wifi channel to avoid any interference you might be experiencing. You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items. (Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel)

Problem solved

Seems completely unrelated to software upgrade.

AppleTV was detecting a large number of WiFi networks on my previous attempts and would not connect.

Today, all of those networks have mysteriously disappeared and only my home network is detected.

Connected with no problem.

I guess it must have been a network interference problem (or sun spots)

iStumbler was a useful App.
