I am running Snow Leopard 10.8.6 and Safari 5.1. Ever since I updated Safari my web browsing has been painfully slow. Pages take 3-5 minutes to load and sometimes I get the spinning ball for half an hour. I also frequently get the message "webpage cannot load." What the heck?

Sounds like you need to update your Flash.

Personally, I use the ClickToFlash extension so that I only have to undergo the flash experience when I ask for it.

Thanks, but what is Flash and how do you update it?
That link gives a tiny bit of info on flash. It's web page software that many sites use. You can google to find out more.
Here is where you can try to update it:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
You can look at the Help menu in Safari, under Installed Plugins to see what Flash you have currently.
