Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Why won't Apple bring back "Save As" since "Duplicate" clearly *****?

I think the question speaks for itself.

You mean it was finally a way of working with documents that made any lick of sense?

I'm so grateful you for acknowledging the deep pain and suffering I've been going through since 1988. Oh, the agony I've endured, working lo those many years with my documents in a way that made no sense at all. Sometimes, I honestly don't know how I managed it.

But now, all is well...I can put my fate in the hands of programmers who (verily, it seems like a miracle!) know so much better than I do what my workflow is and how I should manage it. These wonderful folks will actually change my files, with absolutely no action taken on my part, whether I want them changed or not...because after all, they know best.

I'm in such a better place now. Thank you, Apple!

I certainly have. As I said after six months, what is Save As? Versions is just so easy to work with when you give it a chance. Ah, but some old habits...........and all that.

Cheers

I wouldn't presume to comment on your work habits and tell you how you ought to interact with your Mac, because I know nothing of what they are.

Obviously, you feel no such reluctance to knowingly comment on mine, nor to tell me what should or should not work best for me. Congratulations on your omniscience.

You seem to be doing it now. I guess you really do presume to comment on our work habits since you don't think we know what we speak of.

Congratulations on another post that makes as much sense as all the ones you've made in the past...which is zero.

Since you didn't grasp it the first time, let me spell it out for you. If the new Auto Save/Versioning paradigm works for you and others, that's fine. But it doesn't work for me. And judging by the multiple threads in this forum similar to this one (not to mention elsewhere on the web), it doesn't work for many others.

Tell me, Barney...what part of these earlier comments of mine didn't you understand?

I am still waiting for someone...anyone...to give me a rational reason why Auto Save/Versioning could not be the default for these apps, but capable of being disabled by the user's choice in System Preferences (or within the app itself).

I'd also like someone to explain why it is preferable for Apple to **** off a substantial percentage of its user base — when they could, with this simple stroke, make EVERYONE happy.

Perhaps you don't understand the concept of "default" behavior. You could look it up. Or you could try to answer my questions. Given your track record, I wish you luck.

Firstly, I don't think you were their target group when Lion was released. Thus over 6 million users and only a few having difficulty.

If you are waiting for answers then ring Apple Support and tell them. Not one of your rants here has made a difference in bringing them back. So this 'substantial percentage' (where ever your figures are getting plucked from) may not take into account that the option may not have been able to be written into the new code?

Anyway let this thread die for goodness sakes and give us all a rest.

Bye

Please let this old thread die off and stop annoying everybody over a feature that a few people can't get used to. It's old and offering nothing new whatsoever.

Based on what I've seen around the net (not just here) there are a lot more than "only a few" who don't like the "new" way of doing things. It isn't a case of "having difficulty", it is a case of re-learning/changing the way we do things. I could easily learn to use a hand crank to start my car each morning or opening the trunk to unlock the doors, but that doesn't mean that I'd like it.

Research firm TARP has found that for every person who complains, there are 26 who do not. So if you multiply the ones we see by 26, it may not be 6,000,000 users but it is an alarming number and that is just on the one change.

About 450 such changes could drive off 10% of the users. Lion brought 250 new features to OS X.

The reason a lot of us chose to use OS X is because it didn't get in the way of our work.

I'd just like to point out that if you reinstall older versions of Apple applications - TextEdit etc then - wonderful - 'Save As…' comes back. Works for me - until Apple comes to its senses. I haven't done it with Pages yet but I have no reason to believe it won't work with that also. Fortunately no non-Apple software companies have been so stupid (AFAIK).

You'd not only be doing yourself a favour, but the rest of us too.

I've long said this is a problem with Apple's points system, and you've given me more proof of the hypothesis. You might also like to re-familiarise yourself with the ToU....oh, I forgot, you don't care what they say either, do you?

You might want to familiarize yourself witht he points system. Nobody gets any points for just posting. Someone else has to mark you post as helpful or solved to get any points.

Apple turned this into a blog instead of a tech support forum, generally letting people whine away the day. Just trying to help them make the new community what they intend.
