insert/import a texture?

Hello,

I am a new user to Mac’s and have just discovered the wonder of pages 06.

Previously I was attempting all of my work in a Windows machine using MS Word from office 2000. The one item I dearly miss from word and do not know if it is available in Pages is the add ‘Texture’ feature.

Could an experienced Pages user please inform me if it is possible to insert/import a texture into a Pages document? Ideally I would like to import a texture to the whole page or document and not just into a rectangle or other paragraph shape.

It would be wonderful to build a page design on top of a textured or colored background of ones choice and not be limited to the default color of white.

Thank you for any tips or suggestions.

Misty,

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Aside from textures in charts, Pages doesn't give you the kind of thing you're looking for. But that doesn't mean you can't build it yourself. You can import any texture you want (as a graphic element), fix it to the page, then stretch it so that it fits the page boundaries. If you want it to appear on every page, define it as a Master Object.

Theoretically, you could do the same thing with a color, but I'd use a shape for that, change its color, stretch it, then define as Master Object. If you'll want to use these documents more than once, do a Save as Template.

Does this answer your question?

Hi Dennis,

Thank you for the speedy reply.

I already tried importing a texture and, as you suggested, stretched it to the boundaries. I noticed that this altered the original intended look by expanding the look & feel of the texture to something other than desirable, it looked a bit pixelated.

Also being limited to the boundaries didn’t give the look I was hoping to achieve.

I’ll experiment with your Shape & Master Object idea, I wasn’t aware of that angle.

Thank you for sharing your insights.

Good morning MacMisty,

This will really depend on the texture that you are using.

First of all, think of your intended result. Is this going to be something that you will be printing, or something that you will be sending as a pdf?

Secondly, you cannot control the DPI of the actual object you place and tile for a texture. It will always revert to a 72dpi item. (so if you have something which is 300x300, with a dpi of 150, it should be approximately 2 inches wide. If it is 300x300 and 75dpi, it should be a half inch wide.

Sadly, when used as a tile fill, it imports as 72 dpi, which means your nicely sized image is blown way out of proportion.

Save it in such a way that it is comfortable to see on the screen at 100% in whatever program you are using. resize it so it is the size you want it to appear, and save it at 72dpi. Rescale it down if you have to.

This is a small example of what I mean, and how it looks on screen. Your milage may vary.

(hint, right-click to download the file, otherwise it will open in Safari)

Hi DennisG

Your suggestion worked perfectly.

I found that by first Inserting a Shape - ‘rectangle’ and then streaching it to the entire page boundaries gave me the window to import my texture into.

I used Gerry’s suggestion and took my original 72 dpi texture the size of a postage stamp and simply cloned it in Photoshop up to an 8.8 X 11 size and the rest as they say is history.

Many thanks for the suggestions that lead to a great solution.
