Ok this is a question from a not technical person!!

What script should I run where and how?

I am able to follow you and display all exact duplicates in iTunes

    Thanks for your explanation

    Backup your library.

You can download the Deduper script by right-clicking on this direct link:http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/DeDuper.vbs and then clicking download, save as or whatever your browser offers.

You should be able to double-click the downloaded file to execute it. Windows will probably give some kind of warning about running the file, if you accept it, then it should run. It relies on Windows Scripting Host which is normally installed and enabled by default. This page of the DeDuper thread has some stuff on installing/enabling it if needed.

When you run the script it should look something like this.

And the prompts should lead you through the rest of it.

Had a slight mishap today with my iTunes library... Long story short: I backed up an old .itl file when I reverted my iTunes back to 10.7 (I had installed 11.0.4 yesterday for the iOS 7.0 update and hated the interface). Using the old .itl file somehow created duplicate tracks everywhere.

I can get the DeDuper script to work, but only on the manual/preview setting in which I have to approve every single delete. My library is currently displaying at 190 GB (roughly 35 GB of that are duplicates), thus I would really, really like to have the automated part to work! The error that displays is below:

There's something wrong with the system that uses Internet Explorer to create a progess bar. There's probably a way to fix/register the IE automation object but I don't have a link to hand just now.

You can find add edit the line near the beginning that reads:

    Prog=True                                             ' Display progress bar

    and change it to:

    Prog=False                                            ' Display progress bar

which should stop the error. You'll just have to be patient during the scanning phase because there won't be any visible clue that it is working.

It worked! Thanks so much! I'm definitely holding on to this script. Very useful.

    Hi

Question no. 1:  I'm trying to replicate the "Display Exact Dupliates" option under ITunes 11.1 (126 - 64 bit) and the OPTION key and then click File Menu doesn't offer me any seeming way to select "Display Exact Duplicates".

All I get in the File menu is the menu that one gets whether or not one presses the OPTION key previous to clicking the File.

I somehow found most of my files were put in the trash (it appears!) and I added them again, and now I noticed that I have what appear to be duplicates or triplicates of many songs and I'm trying to find a quick way to delete without having to select each, as I appear to have to do when I use the method:  View > Show Duplicate Items.

Question no. 2:  Further more, with the above View > Show Duplicate Items option, I'm not sure if all the titles (songs) listed include both the original and the duplicate (or triplicate as the case may be) or if those titles displayed are solely duplicates (or triplicates, etc)?

Thanks for any insights any of you can provide!

Try ctrl instead of Option (which is for Mac).

    Hi,

    1. Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. For a Mac use Alt or Option while accessing the menu to reveal the Show Exact Duplicates command.

    2. All copies of all tracks with the same details are listed. Either the same song name and artist for the regular feature, or the same song name, artist, album, track no. & disc no. for exact duplicates. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the trash.

My script is for Windows, Dupin Lite should do something similar on a Mac, or tackle the duplicates by hand. Whichever way you choose backup before you start in case you do something too radical and need to recover.

    Hi tt2,

This sounds like the perfect script for me, unfortunately I get an error too when I try and run it. I'm getting:

    Line     599

    Char    3

Error    The requested operation requires elevation

    Code    800702E4

    Source (null)

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Sounds like you need to run the script as an Administrator and/or adjust your UAC settings. What version of Windows do you have? Is your account an administrator of the computer?

    tt2

  • AJK47 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Yeah I am the administrator, Its Windows 7

Sorry, but what are UAC settings?

  • turingtest2 Level 9 Level 9 (60,065 points)

In that case you probably need to tweak UAC so it either prompts for permission or is disabled completely. The line causing the error (assuming you've got version 1.0.1.8 dated September 6th 2013) is the one that establishes access to the iTunes COM object without which the script cannot do anything useful at all.

Turn off the display of iTunes in the Cloud items (Edit > Preferences > Store) and/or repair permissions...
