from vlc to apple tv

just donwloaded this app nils and its pretty fantastic

i never owned an apple tv, so not too familiar with the interface

can you jot down the steps for hooking up the apple tv with the serve to me/stream to me app

Sorry I'm just getting back to you. Yes, there is another way - if you have an iOS device. Download the Air Video app from iTunes, then install the Air Video Server on your computer. Basically, what it does is converts on the fly to your iOS device, then you can send it to your ATV2 via AirPlay. You can access your files over the Internet, as well (also 3G), not needing to be connected to the same network as your computer. You can check it out here:

I was quite excited when I figured out that Stream To Me and Serve To Me works perfectly as a link between my .avi and other video-files and my ATV2 :-) Finally I can watch everything on my server on my ATV without converting. At least I think it´s not converting.

just visit http://projectswithlove.com/streamtome/ to download the Serve to Me programme for your PC (I guess it´s the same for Mac-users), and follow the instructions. There you can select wich folders or disks you want to share on your network It´s also important to set up some security by selecting a login and password.

If you cannot find your computer automatically on your device (iPhone, iPad), you´ll find the IP address on the Serve to Me homescreen.

Just downloaded AirParrot ($9.99 / £6.63). Works perfectly. You can send your whole display straight to Apple TV, whatever's on it, so good for PDF presentations for example as well as sending .avi files. No need for overhead projectors - just use Apple TV and AirParrot. You can also use it to add your TV screen as a second display to your Mac. Not sure if I'll be doing that anytime soon, but potentially handy. Or you can send just one specific app to the TV.

Snazzy, and for a few extra pennies well worth it - cut out all that server / streaming / coding on the fly nonsense!

I just bought stream to me from itunes for £1.99 and it works a treat. You will need serve to me installed too, which is free. You can't stream to your tv directly from your mac but you can stream to your iphone or ipad, and from there you can hit the airplay button to send it to your apple tv. No, AppleTV only accepts streams from iTunes, it will not accept streams/transcodes from other apps.

You will need to convert them. Try Handbrake.

I just wanted to add that there is also a VLCStreamer app available. The streamer app runs on your Mac and does streaming and/or transcoding on-the-fly, so you can then watch anything on your iPad (via the iOS VLCStreamer app). The free iPad app also has a "stream to Apple TV" button I think. I haven't tried it but maybe someone else can test and post their feedback here?

Just got the iPad3 VLC Streamer works fine to atv for me (.avi files). 🙂

Now I'd just like the standard VLC on my macbook to stream directly to atv so my iPad3 is taken out of the equation.

Hi efrommi - I had that same problem - is your iPad running iOS 4? It seems that AirPlay only works for audio on iOS 4 - you need to upgrade to iOS 5 to get it to stream video as well. Once I ran the update, StreamToMe worked fine. You've probably sorted it out by now, but if not, hope that helps :-)

Of course, this discussion is out of date now, since VLC is now available for iOS in the app store :-D

You would really think that Apple would be incorporating Airplay functionality more widely into OS X especially say for QT and Safari. Seems to be Apple primarily want Airplay as an iOS feature to sell mobile devices.
